Its all in the details......Part I

This post was actually started quite a few months ago. I must confess I forgot about finishing it. But the message is the same, even this many months later...that the details are really what takes a space or room from beautiful to extraordinary, especially if like me you are very detail oriented.

Being a little more than obsessed with details feels like a blessing and at times a curse.  I don't know if that's good or bad, quite honestly. Sometimes, it feels like a curse because I will let something ridiculously small get to me to the point of losing sleep and obsessing non stop which is absurd and which most people could and would let go. On the other hand, it is those very details that can and has the ability to take something from pretty to extraordinary. I think its fair to say most detail oriented people must by the same token have some degree of patience, that they are able to dig out deep from within because details do not just appear, they requite lots of thinking, organization of thoughts and sometimes revisiting the drawing board more than once. Or twice. Or three or five or seven times......

Just now starting to get over the whole building process we have endured for over three and a half years, I realize what makes me love my house so are all the details. If it wasn't for those details, it would not have the quality that to me makes it a cut above, and I do not say this to boast but rather to point that that the details that were paintstakingly thought out and executed are what make it unique and special. I thought back to some of the inspiration to these details as well and it always came back to one place, France! Surprise surprise. I mean seriously that's one place where just walking down the street gets raises your senses to new heights!
SO this post is dedicated to some of the inspiration behind the details and then the eventual details on our home that came to be.....an evolution of sorts. Hope you enjoy!

Warning, this post is very picture heavy, do not read while standing up!

I fell madly in love with the detail and workmanship on this fine chest which was in a friends house that we visited in South of France.......the home was chock full of the most amazing things!

Guest bathroom at my aunts....loved the antique mirror panels

Theres that three panel door again, VERY popular in France

Decided then and there I wanted an oval knob with some kind of decorative motif!

I got serious wrought iron stair railing inspirations while there....
.
More beautiful mill work found in the halls

Amazing door in our hotel

Love the pretty dressy sconce lined in the hallway

This wall gave us our inspiraion for our future breakfast room/stair halls finish

More stunning balcony railings

My bathroom at the hotel.....do the details get any prettier than luxurious white marble!
Beautiful moldings and ceiling medallion
Wonder if that man thought I was the paparazzi? I was only after the way the sconces were lined up on the walls!
Stunning limestone motif

Does this curved window look familiar?

The details here are spellbinding!
So in love with this door and the gorgeous color!
Ahhh the carved limestone and elegant lanterns on the streets of Paris
Close up
The details of the magnificent parterre garden at my aunts house

This fabulous console and painted/glazed paneled wall gave me the inspiration for my bedroom colors and feeling and now this very console graces my hallway!
How about the details of this chest and that hardware!!!!!!

We considered this monastery table for our breakfast room

Another view.....
That gorgeous chest...check out the details.....magnifique! (now in my bedroom)!
Could black look any more sensational? Check out that rich gilded hardware...swoon!!!!!!

This showrooms detailed limed oak walls gave us some ideas for our back stair hall
One of the beautiful factories we visited

And to think thats how it all starts........

The details of the hand forged hardware....amazing! I am  like a kid in a candy store around this stuff!

This color brick on this distant chateau gave me the inspiration for our brick color

Is this the worlds most charming guest house ever?? I loved it...it was hard to leave!

My husband noticed the fine thin bricks....its these kind of details that make a subtle difference between that and lets say a chunky brick at my aunts house

The paneling at the George V in Paris, I liked the wainscoting with wallpaper to warm it up on top,
Loved the details of this carved limestone surround
It was at the George V, that we decided on a three paneled door

Theres that hallway again
This caught my eye, I loved the fine elegant lines..and we mimicked this very railing for the railing that will go above our front door outside!

And now our house with all of those details and inspirations applied..............

Laundry room doors and glazing over paint
Herringbone floors
Basketweave flooring

Paneling in family room

Very dark stain against white marble in pantry

Wire grille in kitchen
Oil rubbed bronze hardware and oversized subways

Hardware

Crown molding
Cremone bolts on all French doors
Ceiling medallions in living room
Crown in living room
Front door
Medallion in dining room

Door knobs
Limed oak paneling in stairhall
Spindle details in upper cabinets in laundry

Egg and dart detailing

I know you are jealous of my light fixture.........come on admit it!

So there you have it...the devil really is in the details but so worth it!  Agree? Or think its a wasted effort of energy and time? I think the details are what makes something become interesting, noteworthy and highly personal. Realized this has to be part 1 because I have so many pictures on details. It would have been too much for one post...so more to come!  Would love to know what you think!

Also for many who asked, the brackets I featured yesterday are now up for sale on my online store under New Additions. Hope you have a fabulous day!

  3. What a beautiful post. I agree its hard to not be inspired when roaming the streets of Paris. The architecture and attention to detail is just incredible. I love seeing how it found that same inspiration in your own beautiful home. I really see a common theme here, and agree Tina the details really do make the difference, especially when it comes to construction. I loved this post and will be sharing it with my husband (an architect) who lives eats and breaths details!

  4. Yes, this post is heavy with photos but one worth taking the time to sit down and savor. Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my mouth. Oh, your photos of Paris are divine. Your Aunt has an amazing home too! Tina, I need you to hurry up and get that book deal because I want your decor book of your home for my coffee table! xo

  6. Incredible! Paris, your home, the details, it is all such a beautiful and perfect way to start my morning.
We built 3 years ago not quite on the scale of yours but a very impressive large Georgian and we were fixated as was our builder on the smallest of details. When people come over they remark on certain things we did you just dont see done much any more (like your house) and I agree its those details that do make the difference. I can relate to your detail orientation very much.
    Beautiful read.

  8. Tina,

It's always a pleasure to learn more about what inspires design details for others. I feel exactly the same way about details they are worth the fuss for lasting satisfaction. I do find most people do not want to take the time to get into the details.

Thanks for sharing your personal inspiration photo's and how you decided to put what where. I really enjoyed it.

Your home has really ome together so beautifully and finding the qualified craftsmen I'm sure is another post onto itself but worthy of a blog post too.

You will always feel complete when you look around your home and know it was so worth the wait, worry, and wishes that are now details of beautiful memories that did come true...how grand...love it all.

  9. Hello Tina

A delightful and informative post. You are so right about details being of high importance. It is always so rewarding when one finds the perfect items which fits. It can be the molding used in a picture frame which casts a museum quality and the oval door knob is just precious.
Thank you and may your day bring you delight

  13. This was amazing. I love seeing how the wheels were turning way before your home was even done. How neat to see the creative process first hand. On a much smaller and grander scale, we built a wonderful beach house off the NC coast and got a lot of inspiration when we visited Nantucket for almost 10 days (rented a house there). I took so many pictures and it was great pulling all the details from that visit so I can relate.
Your home will stand the test of time as a classically beautiful, elegant grand manor home. You were smart to follow through with the details as those things are often hard to add later. Very much enjoyed this. Thank you-

  15. The details you chose really do make your house special. I enjoyed seeing the origin of your inspiration. Your aunt's house and garden are so beautiful, by the way. I love all the hardware you have chosen with door knobs and cremone bolts being at the top of my list. Of course, the railings are magnifique.

  16. I loved everything you post, but this post alone is the winner. Your house is coming along beautiful.
BTW, what is the name the store for the hand hardware?

  17. OMG, were you the secret author behind Charles Faudree's latest book "Details"? LOL. This was a great post, I love seeing the inspriration behind the choices people make in their decor.
It's always fun to see how someone can see something they love, and then interpret it for their own home. This was so much fun, can't wait for part II.

  19. I couldn't agree more - it's exhausting when deciding but so worth it in the end. That's exactly why I want to build - to get a chance to add those special details and make the home truly to our tastes. You have done a beautiful job incorporating so many details in your home - that's what makes it unique to you!

  20. Incredible and a real treat for us detail oriented nutjobs:-) Yes I get so hung up on them, the renovation we did a few years ago was delayed by almost 7 months because I got so into choosing the moldings and doors! But look at the end result, just perfect in every way.

Tina, hope Teddys doing great. I know hes getting lots of love. Please update us when you have news about whats happened with the dogs/owner who is not stepping up. It is disgusting, they must be put down and cease to be a threat to not only you but others and their children and pets. I was so torn up hearing and reading his story. Best of luck to you.

  25. So fun to see how you were inspired and how you translated your inspiration into your own home. How exciting for you to see it finally come to fruition. I agree it is all in the details. I wrote a post on this very subject and quoted Eames,"The details are not the details they make the design!" I think your home proves his point very well, Happy weekend,

  31. Oh don't apologize for all the pictures. I think we all love them! I find it so wonderful to see what and how you picked style for your home. I personally love your style. The brick, limestone, wood, etc. are all amazing! Thanks so much for sharing this with us all! Give a hug to Teddy bear!

  32. love your home!!! i hesitate to comment since it is just beautiful, but... in your kitchen, instead of on the backsplash, have you considered putting your plugs underneath the cabinents

  33. Tina, I agree with you 1000% on the details. I am borderline obsessive about exactly the right detail, and I have driven many a contractor crazy when a chandelier had to be re-hung 1 1/4" lower!!

In the end, it's not detail--it's harmony. You have a house of (seemingly) effortless grace, and we all know how much detail work goes into making something effortless! Well done, you!

  34. Tina,
I agree with you! It's the details, or lack thereof, that can make or break any room. That rule seems to apply in houses, large or small.

Your attention to detail has truly paid off and your home is beautiful.

  36. Thank for the escape to Paris and a behind the scenes peek at your magnificent home. You take detail oriented to new heights and I so admire each and every one. I agree that it is what separates a pretty room from a truly extraoridnary one. We live in an older tudor home which has beautiful detailing, most of it we have just worked around as we cannot bear to think of replacing it. I have a real apprecation for the way things used to be done, and rarely are anymore. So beautiful to see the close ups of what makes your home a true masterpiece. Enjoyed this so much.

  38. Tina, I could not agree with you more. I am obsessed with the smallest details and can completely relate as to losing sleep ( or never going to sleep) thinking about the details! Outstanding detail in your home, I love it all. I do have one question... What are the finial type details on the slate roof around the edge? I have never seen this before, the look amazing. Would love to know. Thanks for another amazing post.

  39. Tina,
I never post comments but I have admired your blog for sometime and felt compelled to comment on this particular one !
We just arrived back from a trip to Paris. We stayed at the George V as well......(Loved it !) As I was walking through the halls I noticed the grilles on some of their utility areas were exactly like the ones you put in your kitchen....I stopped to admire them and commented to my husband ( who thought I was crazy ) that they were just like the ones I had seen on a blog I loved and now here today you posted pictures of the George V and of your kitchen grilles !!!!
Your home is beyond lovely....looks like something Baron Haussmann would build himself !
and Thank You for ALL of your inspiring, detail rich posts... everyone is enjoyed !

  42. Hello Tina,

How are you and of course how is Teddy feeling today?

I love seeing all of the inspiration for your lovely house. France and in particular Paris does offer one numerous sources of inspiration, as you say, just walking down the street.

Everything is spectacular, I have said that since I began to follow your blog. Your attention to the details and to the craftsmanship of your home has always been one of the most beautiful aspects of your home. It truely is a work of art and a house that will be there for generations.

    Have a happy Friday!

  45. Details are so often overlooked by builders. It seems like they just want to get in and get out with as much money in their pocket as possible. Its good to see someone who recognizes that details are what makes the home special and unique.
