Designer Spotlight: Tucker and Marks

Hello!  For this designer series...I feature San Francisco based Suzanne Tucker and Timothy Marks of Tucker and Marks, one of my favorite firms who has proved time and time again that though they decorate in a variety of styles, it appears classic elegance without being overly formal  is their true calling. Suzanne Tucker is the principle designer and Timothy Marks oversees the business end. They also have a talented design staff on hand. Their approach to design is to create warm, approachable, elegant living arrangements that will stand the test of time and endure. Their rooms are distinctively gorgeous, inviting and not overly stuffy...each one looks like you could easily imagine sitting there with family and friends, enjoying yourself ensconced  in the beauty of the room.

What I love about their rooms is that they are all so interesting, they don't look like some designers' rooms that all get the same winning formula applied to each project they do. When I look at these rooms, my eye is drawn to the details and the  interesting objects that were used. They say its all in the details, and there are many details to each of these spaces....which is what I think makes them so interesting and eye catching. They also has a wonderful way of working with color and you can see they favor a lot of the earthy tones. They do it all....everything from ranches and vacation homes to formal homes and city apartments. Suzanne came out with a wonderful book, "Rooms to remember-the classic interiors of Suzanne Tucker"...its a wonderful book and the kind you refer back to often. You know I love to know if you have a favorite....I would have to say there are just too many for me to pick just one!

  1. Gorgeous rooms as always.

I really like the idea with a sofa in a window. If I had more windows I would definitely copy because it looks like such a quiet but still light place. I would love to curl up there and read.

  2. Tina,

Tucker and Marks have a wonderful formula used in their design projects. I notice that colors, textures, lighting and flow in these large home spaces match the scale of furnishings. These spaces bring hospitality to mind as it appears lots of entertaining happens there.

Can't select a favorite room they're all cozy in a grand way. Detail is vital in a room and it prompts a response from all who enter and that's what causes a
lingering first impression and a desire to return again often.

  4. Tina: I liked the bedroom with the TALL, curtained half tester style canopy. I am about to do one for a bedroom that will be 12 ft tall, and this picture confirms that it will work, and will create a lot of drama. Your timing is perfect!

  8. They do fabulous bathrooms, my goodness. I love the philosophy you point out, that they want things to be "approachable," something I think that is frequently overlooked in homes where that needs to be treated as a vital element.

Beautiful photos of their work, what a fun way to start the day!

  17. All amazing, but having grown up in Colorado I love the cozy mountain retreat bedroom. I can practically hear the birds and the creek outside the window. Reminds me of Vail or maybe Steamboat Springs.

  18. What a lovely collection of rooms. The mantel with the cherry blossoms is our favorite. Love the neutral colors of the room with the splash of color given by the cherry blossoms. This room also has great symmetry.

  26. Tina, I am with you - how can I possibly pick one room?! They are all stunning.

The Napa Vally home might be my favorite, though. I love how the indoors and outdoors are tied together in great harmony. And I love the different textures. Brick, wood, steel doors, leather etc.

Thank you for introducing us to this talented duo.

    Warm hugs,
