I am out of town for 2 days but will announce the winner tomorrow morning! Well, the house decisions continue to mount, very  exciting indeed! However there are days, admittedly that I feel very overwhelmed. I have had many many of you ask and email me about who we are using to decorate or if we are going to use someone...and the answer is not right this minute. We had started with someone who is very talented but I was not totally accepting his "vision" for the decor and having some experience, I have some strong opinions. I have so many ideas, concepts and visions in my head of how I want it to end up looking that working with someone might not be feasible as generally you are hiring them to have them realize your vision and if the two visions are not in the same stratosphere that can be a problem! That said we are in talks with someone whose work I am a big big fan of so we will see where it goes. In the meantime, I plod ahead and it feels darn good to be making some concrete decisions albeit small ones.....finally. So as I do every Thursday, here is what I am loving this week.........

LIGHTING. Saw some antique mirrored sconces in an antiques shop, which were gorgeous but sold. They also weren't in the best condition so all was not lost, they did however spark an idea..and in my travels I found this "old/new" pair of antiqued mirror sconces....I love them. What do you think? I am thinking of these for one of the powder rooms or my dressing area. Below that are a few final contenders for our outdoor lighting. A tough choice..as I love all of them but we have to narrow it down, they are exact replicas of period pieces which is why I love them..you don't see them coming and going. If you have a particular favorite, considering our house which is pictured to the right of this post, then please let me know!

WALLPAPERS. You know, I love them and have a blast looking for them. I have decided on the brown, and rusty one from Thibaut (shown last Thursday) for my library powder room and am so excited about it. I found these Christoper Norman papers which I think are so beautiful, the colors, the pattens, old world and elegant but with a twist. The second one is really bold but I am so drawn to it for some reason...does anyone else feel that way? I just can't stop looking at it, but don't know where I would put it or if it is right for my house and yet it keeps haunting me and beckoning me to use it....lol.

ORMOLU CONTAINERS. I like to keep beautiful decorative containers on hand and to have them regularly filled with seasonal plants or flowers. I recently added a few to my collection. I am always amazed at how much they can add to a room, as its such an elegant and relatively inexpensive change to make. I normally use orchids and the good news is if taken proper care of they actually can last quite a while...so below are some of the containers that I love, ormolu with a gold leaf accent....pretty elegant, don't you think?

CARPETING. My battle has raged on with my husband over carpeting in the bedrooms vs. putting wood floors. I love wood floors but feel strongly that the bedrooms should be carpeted as its so pretty, cozy and feels so good on the feet...just something about the way carpet feels and looks that I am feeling strongly about, so I am being pretty stubborn. Hoping to sway him by some pretty choices.....the ones below are for my sons' rooms, any thoughts?

VELVET OTTOMANS. I have always loved the inviting feel of a pretty ottoman, like the way it can be moved  anywhere in the room where you need an impromptu extra seat and the way they double as  great looking tables especially with a tray or glass round on top. They are so versatile and can be such a fun decorative object to dress up. Here are a few samples of some that I like..do you have one? Would you like one?

FABRICS WITH BIRDS. I have always liked birds quite a bit, my old wallpaper in my bedroom had a beautiful soft palette of the palest gray green with peacocks and it was quite gorgeous, I bought beautiful peacock crystal sconces and in general am drawn to birds, peacocks and such. So I recently saw some gorgeous fabrics with birds and am brainstorming as to where I might be able to use them.... Any ideas?

VENETIAN MIRRORS. This is a serious love and there is no breakup in the near future. I have always loved these mirrors...with their almost Lacy delicate nature, they are just so grand, regal, elegant and yet understated in the most sophisticated way. In the right spot, this can make quite  the statement. Particularly with a pretty and simple antique chest with a few interesting objects, but nothing that would compete with the beauty of the mirror above it. It would be stunning for a wide gallery hallway or a small vestibule leading off a hallway to another room..humm, I have just the spot! The last one I thought would be gorgeous in a ladies dressing room/area.

MARBLE ANYTHING. Of course its no secret of my obsession with all things marble, particularly gorgeous veiney white marble. Could this Sherle Wagner tub be any more luxurious and over the top in an old world amazingly elegant kind of way? (Not even in the cards but it was fun to look at) And of course I simply cannot do one of these Thursday posts without including something from New Ravenna...so here are a few goodies to entice you with.....(unreal what they can do with marble, in awe every time I see their creations)!

MONOGRAMMED ANYTHING. I discovered these gorgeous laminated placemats..how pretty are they? I love the traditional old world designs and the monogrammed ones as well. What do you think? Just love the English inspired designs and styles...fabulous.

OK my brain can only take in so much,  and my senses are stimulated and in overdrive! I hope you enjoyed these items that I am loving on Thursday, do you have a favorite or something you are loving this week that you want to share? Do tell! Enjoy your day.....

  1. Love, love, love the antique mirrored sconces! Wish we had some in the shop right now but just sold my favorite ones! We do have some reproduction mirrored ones on the way but they aren't as pretty as the ones you showed here! Love the carpet choices! Would love for you to check out Mulberry's website though! We are in the process of updating it so if we should get anymore sconces in they will be on there quickly! Thanks for the beautiful ideas! www.mulberryheightsantiques.com

  2. That was a complete glamfest! Love the first set of wall sconces!! Love wood floors throughout the home, but have wall to wall carpet in my bedroom. A soft velvet ottoman is great b/c it can double as seating.

And, those monogrammed placemats. Um, must have.

    Just delightful!!! xoxo Elizabeth

  8. I have a fascination with all these things as well!
Recently I began opening the boxes in my garage from purchases I made several years ago on ebay in preparation for the move to our new home. Chandeliers, door hardware, mirrors, ormolu, wall sconces... Although I had marked the boxes as they arrived, my mind was a bit fuzzy as to the exact details after three years!
It was like Christmas! I had utterly forgotten about the Empire chandelier and a pair of crystal elk sconces!
I saved for months to buy a similar bathtub from ebay, though mine is actually going to be used outdoors with a fountain!
I love the carpeting you chose but I personally would be hesitant to choose a strong pattern. Perhaps a sisal with a rug over it?
Whatever you do will be lovely!

  9. you might want to consider this;
    they have synthetic jute carpet
    {it is softer than jute}
most people use it out doors as area rugs etc etc.
but there are so many gorgeous styles and manufacturers....
i have used it wall to wall.
    it looks great.
then i use small area rug on each side of the bed.

it is an alternative-it is VERY durable

  11. Tina,

Love your Thursday post because it's before giveaway Friday of Swank Lamps....Can't wait! Have fun on your couple of days away.

I agree with you on your conclusion of a collaboration of tension. Client + Designer = harmony (guided light and not forced issues). It's a golden rule of mine: People won't remember what you said or did but they will remember how you make them "feel" people matter.

You're doing what a designer, in my designer opinion, does and that is researching your options, keeping the integrity of the design in mind, and following your heart...a winning combination. Most of the time it's not the work involved that's hard it's people's personalities that get in the way and it's usually motivated by fear or jealousy that results in negativity.

Our tastes are the same love all that you've shown us, as we learn more about what "Tina Loves":

Mirrored Sconce has a strong appeal and perfect for a power room
Lighting very appealing details and perfect are #3,5, & 7
Wallpaper the second paper with an armored look or Fleur di Lis is fabulous.
Ormolu Containers are perfect and can be rotated due to size and colors and of course my favorite is the blue and white.
Carpets I also love the feel under my feet. Your taste is superb and your husband will come around because it's about collaboration...good design always is. You're both great at it look at the home your building together. I like the carpets of #1, 3-5, because of the details, small patterns and overall colors.
Velvet ottoman #3 is so elegant with the fringe.
Fabric with birds my favorite is #3 with the energy of brighter colors and would be perfect in a master suite sitting area, ladies dressing, ladies office and formal living room.
Mirror selected is so perfect in a ladies dressing area.
Marble...well I addressed this obsession in a previous post
Love monogramed everything table, linens, clothing, and paper.

You are creating such a lovely home and haven and it's so rewarding to visit your blog. It's fulfilling and inspiring to see you map out design details with passion. Have a magical day kiss to Teddy too.

  14. I love the antique mirrored sconces. Almost all the lighting in my house is vintage. I like it that you can't find them in stores. Even my outdoor porch light is a vintage one I bought off of Ebay. As far as your choices for outdoor lighting. My favorite was the last one.

  15. Beautiful, inspiring post. I will give you my 3 cents(inflation has made it go up:):). When we built this house we were allowed the same allounce for carpet or hardwood floors. STUPIDLY I did carpet in all the bedrooms. Now I SO wish I had done the hardwood and used a bordered carpet in the bedrooms allowing just a few inches of floor to show. Maybe that is your compromise???? I love the sconces. The forst 2 ottomans I love, I am not a "fringe" person. The marble bathtub made me GASP!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!! What a dream. Loved all the mirrors, hard to make a choice. The containers are a favorite. So versatile and useful while beaing beautiful. It is SO MUCH FUN joining you on this journey. I just wish I had known about blogging when we built this house. XO, Pinky

  16. You've showcased so many of my favorite things. I love lanterns and sconces. For me the older the better. I'm not a huge fan of new anything but upholstered pieces. Same goes with mirrors. The old ones have such character. Love a bird on anything and particularly fabrics. My dining chairs are covered in a linen fabric with birds that I just adore. Love the velvet tufted ottomans. The ones with the little turned legs were my favorite. Fabulous images as always. Hope your out of town time is for fun. I'm headed to Dallas tomorrow for our new baby!

  17. Oh my! I so look forward to reading your blog daily. I don't think you need a designer, your choices are amazing! The venetian mirrors and mirrored scones are beautiful! Thanks!

  18. Love the venetian mirrors. The 3rd one would look beautiful in a ladies dressing room/powder room. I love how delicate and refined it looks. I have to agree with you about carpeting the bedrooms. The first carpet, blue, white & gold, is fantastic. Love the detail and pattern. You have amazing taste!

  21. What a beautiful and inspiring post!! I *love* the wall papers... so lovely.

  22. Tina, I really don't think you need a decorator/designer. Your taste is exquisite!Because your home will literally be so grand (in size, scale, architecture, etc.) & there's so many decisions to make & furnishings to choose to fill this grand home, you must feel overwhelmed at times. I know you don't want to make a lot of expensive mistakes, so you probably should take as much time as you need and maybe decorate in stages. I've read that some decorators have no problems making decorating decisions about their client's homes, but stress & obsess and can be indecisive when it comes to their own homes. You may only need a designer/decorator to help you pull things together, but I believe you can do this!
Now, lighting: Love the ones for bath/powder room. For outdoor, love #'s 2,4,6, and 8 best. Wallpaper: Not having seen your design board & where you plan to use these papers, #1 is beautifully safe, but #2 could also be strikingly bold & beautiful. Ormolu planters: love them all! Carpet: Love #'s 1, 3, and 5 best. I love the look of hardwood, but in the bedroom carpet or rugs feel good underfoot. So, consider both! Do a bound carpet allowing the hardwood to show around the perimeter of the room. Or, (according to how large your bedroom will be) do the bound carpet on top of hardwood in the sleeping area & something else (or nothing?) in the sitting/reading area. Velvet ottomans: I love most any kind of tufted ones. The boullion (spelling?) fringe really dresses it up, but I like ottomans with or without it. Fabric with birds: Love them all. Would even look good on the wall. Venetian mirrors: Love them all! The last one would look great where you're considering it & flanked with just the right sconces. The Marble: Magnificent! Enough said. Monograms: I love quality work, also.
I so look forward to your "things you love" Thursdays.

  23. You are on the road to some pretty fabulous options! I adore birds in wallcoverings and textiles...love, love, love! I just placed an order yesterday for a clent's round velvet ottoman...they are super practical while be beautiful. The first sconce is gorgeous! The monogram touches are what make a home personal. We must get a date on our calendars soon! Enjoy your weekend.

  25. OK, Tina STOP IT! I have those sconces too! So your sconces and chandelier, shall I just tell you what lighting to get next? That is too funny, talk about great taste you have…lol. Rest of my lighting here in my studio is antique so can’t wait to see what you pick next. Velvet ottomans, love them! We went with an antique Trumeau mirror and still wish I had a Venetian mirror. You have such wonderful taste and I hope you enjoy your out of town time!

  26. Certainly a lot to love - seems like you've got it covered!! I think the first sconces are my pick. We have no carpeting anywhere - only area rugs but I think I would like it in a bedroom. And I have those mats - lovely.

  27. What an amazingly generous giveaway. And all of your choices kept causing me to keep nodding my head - the ottomans, that marble tub - wow. Thank you very much for stopping by the blog. I am probably too late for the giveaway, but I thought I'd visit. Enjoy your weekend. :)

  29. L O V E your sconces, 1st wallpaper, Venetian mirrors, velvet ottoman and any of the carpets not knowing the rest of the picture. Definitely wood floors with large, bound area carpet with the wood left uncovered as a frame. When in doubt, choose vintage and neutral in walls, floors, and tile. It will be classic, will appear richer and will be in keeping with your gorgeous home design. European finishes are very classic and it's the largest investment. Use bold fabrics and/or decor that is easier to change when you get tired of colors or pattern. Can't wait to see the progress!!!

  30. Very interesting about working with a designer, then not having it work out. Many designers out there have a certain 'look', and if you want something slightly different, I can see how it would be hard.

Other designers are really trying to achieve the vision of the client.

I took the approach that I wanted my designer to totally understand what I like - through pictures mainly, and through our meetings - then translate that into the design of the house. I know what I like, but I also want to stretch a bit into the more sophisticated, and that is what my designer is doing with our decor.

Love the placemats - my parents are (were) British, so I grew up with hardback placemats. Who makes them?

    Have a great weekend!

    Holly
