A new twist on an old classic....Butlers pantries!

Good morning...the situation in Japan sadly is evolving, to become an even more catastrophic one than what was originally suggested. I had a feeling that the death toll and level of destruction would be great, with such a devastating earthquake. All we can do is pray for the people of Japan and ask God to look over and protect them and help them with the recovery process. On our end, we should all take the time to give thanks for even the smallest things.....if it shows us one thing, it is that life is more precious than we can possibly imagine and we must covet and cherish what we have.
I came across this short, to the point list of ways we can help through Time's newsfeed....click

I love the look of a beautiful old world butlers pantry. Especially if the ceilings are nice and tall and the cabinets are taken straight up. Butlers pantries have made a comeback and a big one at that! Once used in larger, grander traditional homes, they are now being put into all styles and sizes of homes, more than ever. They were traditionally used for storage, for things like silver, linens, china services,etc.....now they are used for everything from storage to prep to serving. And it has been told that this is one of the most requested rooms in new construction since the mid 1990's.....interesting, how the old eventually becomes the new again.
Pantries can be as small as a single hutch or as large as a kitchen..but suffice to say there are so many fabulous things one can do when designing a butlers pantry..... whether to go all the way up to the ceiling with the cabinets even if it means creating smaller boxed cabinetry on top that might never get used. Whether to use all wood, glass or metal screened doors or a combination of the three. What kind of counter tops to use..I am always a huge fan of marble. What kinds of appliances, sinks,etc..you might need and of course establishing what the needs are of the butlers pantry.
Will this really be used as a smaller prep kitchen or is it just another beautiful space to store and display gorgeous things? Beautiful things can come in small packages as is evidenced by the gorgeous spaces in today's post. i think its all about scale, execution, texture, and of course the finish. Lighting helps as does the selection of counter tops and back splashes. So many variables..no wrong or right away..it all comes down to personal taste, budget and style. I love each and every one of these......do you have a favorite? How do you like to use a butlers pantry? Would you want one?

  2. yes .
    japan is unbelievable sadness.

    but onto a more frivolous note,{which i live for}
    the butler pantry-
i have always thought of a butlers pantry as
being 'BACK STAGE' from the main event.
which is what it really is.
i don't think that one is complete without at least a small sink.
    and of course.....a butler!
    {snipping at the scotch}

    all the images are divine
but that last one had me intrigued.
the book shelf around the door to the pantry.

    xx me

  5. Yes, Japan, I can begin to wrap my head around the situation. I posted about a few easy ways to lend a hand in my post yesterday. And butler's pantries, I'm so intrigued with them. If I were to built a custom house it would have both this room and a mud room! Janell

  7. I grew up in a house with a kitchen food pantry and a dry Butler's Pantry, and my last house had the same--couldn't live without them!! The Butler's Pantry right off the formal dining room is essential, and I love the touch of having an extra dishwasher to hand.

  8. I love Butlers pantries and this is an incredible line up. I saved several for my files. I love those that have a mix of glass front cabinets for display and solid to hide things. A sink and dishwasher are a real plus!

I have always had a true fascination with butler's pantries...we recently added a small one in our house and I have loved every minute of it! It really does serve a great purpose even in every day life but especially when entertaining!
    Thanks for posting both!

  12. After seeing all of those gorgeous examples I NEED a butler's pantry! why oh why don't we all have a spot like these to house all of our pretties and make our lives so much easier?
And yes, my prayers go out to everyone in Japan just trying to cope. xo

You have such great inspiration photos! So many I had not seen before. Thanks.

  15. Tina,

The amazing thing about prayer is once directed it can reach faster and farther than the speed of light. Thank God it does and have the empathy to pray for Japan. It is the most powerful thing we can do.

Butcher's pantry is a form of efficiency and I'm all for that. Love all photo's and my requirements are all those shown wood, glass, space, sink, dishwasher, wine cooler, display spaces, and great lighting.

Beautiful spaces for me, would include, pocket doors, refrigerator drawers and computer technology for food and wine necessities, data bases for inventories of china, stemware, silverware, linens, etc. All you need to make gatherings and parties fabulous...a place for everything and everything in it's place.

  17. Such sad news from Japan, more every day.

I love a Butler's Pantry! These are wonderful images. We all have extra dishes and special holiday pieces that need storage. I think you use them more if they are stored properly in cabinets, than buried away somewhere wrapped up to be used some day! I love all of these!

  18. I like for my pantries to at least be walk-in ones. There are many here that I really like. Good post.

  19. I think my favorite room in my old house was the butler's pantry (I'm pretty sure I showed it when I posted about the house). There's something so appealing with the order, neatness and a place for everything. I'm pretty sure that blue one is Miles Redd (shown with light and dark lighting) - it is one of my favorites!!

  20. I think a Butler's Pantry is proof that function and beauty go hand in hand. I would LOVE to have a butler's pantry to store all my "pretty things" and to keep all those serving pieces you rarely use, but need. I love the classics!! And yes, my heart goes out to those in Japan. My prayers are with them!

  21. This post is very timely as we are in the process of interviewing architects to update our 1920s home. One of my requests has been the addition of a butler's pantry and it has been fun to see how each of the firms we've interviewed has approached this. For me, it is going to sortof be in a hallway so it has to look nice...and will likely only have cabinetry on one side as the corridoor will be slightly visable from the front door. I want a bar sink and dishwasher drawers for glassware for sure and storage, storage, storage for my platters and entertaining items. I love many you posted above but am particularly drawn to the Elizabeth Kimberly designed grey. I love the substantial moldings she used as well.

PS--Sorry you had trouble seeing my photos this Am. I emailed my tech guy to see if there is a setting that needs tweeking or something.

  23. All of these are absolutely divine...most are bigger than my kitchen, but how wonderful to have this kind of space for entertaining with or without a butler.

  24. I am an absolute fan of a butler's pantry. I have a small one with glass front upper shelves that I use for china, crystal, silver and lots of my pretties. The bottom cabinets are perfect when having a party to hold all of the extra linen napkins, plates and silverware used to replenish a buffet line. The one you said was your all time favorite is mine too...perfect size and gorgeous detail.

  26. Butler's pantries are definitely the way to go and I know I love storing my linen, flower vases and jugs, silverware, brooms, lightbulbs everything in there and it is hidden by two sets of doors. Ours has a two way entry ... one from the hallway and one from the kitchen so it is great. I also have an old dumb-waiter which is about 110 years old which allows me to serve through from the back of the kitchen straight into the dining room. I love it and my daughter Georgiana thinks it is fun to climb through or pretend she is at a shop buying something!
The situation in Japan is horrific and it does make you realize the tenuous and fragile nature of life. I hope they can pull through and they do need our help.
    Great post and best wishes

  27. They are all beautiful.

I have a large walk-in pantry - I'm not sure that it's a "butler's pantry" though - there is no food prep or counter top - it's just one wall with deep shelves. It's located in the area behind the fridge in my kitchen - it's 3' x 12', and is great for food storage, as well as for the storage of all my small appliances (toaster, crock pot, etc. etc.) - it wasn't one of the "selling" points when we bought out house, but it is one of the best features of the house, now that we've had the time to appreciate it.

  30. BP envy. That's me. I have always loved them. In your pics the sliding pocket doors - *love* and all the glass doors in Willow Decor - *sigh*. It reminds me of our summer home in upstate NY. I can still feel the closing of the doors, how the glass seemed to rattle and the wonderful musty smell when opening it for the first time when we arrived. What a great post! :)

    Japan. When will it stop?

  31. Like you I love butlers pantries. When I was designing my weekend home I knew that I needed to be able to accommodate and feed a lot of people so one thing that I had to have was a large pantry. Originally I was going to have shelving on one side and then huge sub zero individual fridge and freezer on the opposite side, but what I ended up with was shelving on one side, a fridge/freezer at the back and then a huge built in cabinet with glass doors on the other side. I love how much stuff I can store in this room! It faces the wine cellar, and I love how much stuff I can store in there too!
Can't wait to see what you do.
