Weekend musings.........

Hi..how is your weekend going? Finally the first weekend in a loong time that we only have dinner plans on the calendar and not much else and  I have come down with something! Not sure if its allergies or a cold, but I have basically lost my voice......so looks like it will be a weekend to rest and get better (great weekend to catch the Olympic action). Plus its supposed to thunderstorm and I LOVE being in when its nasty besides not much I can do to fight it. Didn't think allergies could flare up this time of year but several have told me its really bad right now! Onto other things like the house...... Both powder rooms are officially in the works (window treatments) so I am a happy camper. Plus I have other small projects happening..so things are moving and shaking here.

For the powder room off the kitchen, the more casual one....I fell in love with this wallpaper and wanted a more casual fabric for the windows, so got a silk gingham (if there is leftover would love to make a dress out of it)! And don't you LOVE when you find the perfect trim? Well lo and behold I found it my one day last week which was a super productive day..I mean I was on fire. There it was....a no brainer. I didn't  have to think, I ordered it then and there and its en route to the fabricator! Cannot wait to see this room complete. I love completed rooms (really don't have any but its so nice when you know a room is done)!!

My attention next is going to four rooms, I know ambitious for someone who has been pretty lame lately.....but trust me I am pacing myself but need to take full advantage of when the mood strikes! My bedroom, the guest room, the living room and the dining room. The dining room already has the table, and we chose the Charis so now its just finalizing the fabric, and I decided i am going simple, so I can really focus on the chinoiserie walls and allow that to be the statement in the room. For my bedroom and the guest room..I have a small album of inspirations that I keep handy, so here are some of them........

For the guest room I am doing a bed just like the one below.....and fabric inspirations waver between going with the blues and creams to doing something more monochromatic.....hummmm!
This is a very pale green with taupes and beiges

Blue and white...a classic

Another option....

And yet another

Another beautiful pattern

The queen bed will look just like this (with a coordinating check) Anything above standing out to you when you visualize it like the bed below?

For our dining room we have ordered this Ralph Lauren chandelier. We had a beautiful antique chandelier in our old house but its too small for our current dining room. So, this was instant love when I laid eyes on it..cannot wait to see it up! Here it is in the store.....

OK now something I have been thinking about for my kitchen, I LOVE my kitchen, not like but love. It is everything I ever wanted, but one small detail I thought about when I was selecting hardware but chickened out on was putting antique brass hardware on my island. I actually like not seeing everything so "matchy matchy" in a kitchen and like when I see the island have something different, its almost like apiece of furniture. The oil rubbed bronze, though beautiful just blends into the black of the island so its not pronounced. Below is picture for you to see.....and then below it what I am considering, its really beautiful and very heavy duty, looks like it came off of some old yacht or something, it looks aged and is unlacquered brass....thoughts????  Would love to hear your opinions!

And here are some of the pieces...
This beauty comes in 4" and a 12" I would put two 12" on either end of the island to hold towels...like that look!

The heavy duty pulls.....

I love traditional planters, simple, and love anything with a lattice or trellis design. SO I am very excited that I bit the bullet and ordered these gorgeous planters in the limestone finish. They are going to be so pretty with a beautiful topiary of some sort and overflowing white flowers on the bottom with ivy spilling out. I have the vision very alive in my head. This is from the line I carry and I am so in love with each and every thing they carry. Plus these are big, 36" tall by 36" wide...very generous, cannot wait!! Happy birthday to my husband. Dont' tell me i am the only one who gets things I love but likes to act like they are a "gift" for those we love..........
Then ordered a few of these for the patio......they come in three sizes, very classic design.
So ordered this one for the pool area.....

Debating between all these beauties...HELP! Which one? I want one for around the pool......whichever I do will be in the aged moss (as shown in most of the pictures) though 8 finishes are offered, the aged moss goes best with my house.

If I do these, I will do the pair.........so pretty!! I have a "thing" for classical cherubs!

Which of the cherubs is your favorite? I love them all and honestly having a heck of a time deciding!

And here for no real reason at all, other than I just love these pictures that make me feeling something.....
Isnt' this an amazing picture?
I have been in love with this picture for forever...the colors, the setting, the time of day and lighting, I am imagining its near Provence or Tuscany, the table is waiting to be set with a rustic elegant dinner for friends and family.....ahhhh love this picture!

Last random tidbit, probably my most favorite dessert in the entire world is a really good key lime pie...the tanginess of lime with the buttery crunch of the graham cracker crust....can I get a "yum"! So.....this is being hailed as the best recipe and was featured on Oprah as such.......planning to make this one day very soon but just in case you are in a baking mood, here it is...and promise me you will tell me if its really "all that"!

Best Key Lime Pie
Servings: Serves 8
Ingredients:
Graham Cracker Crust:
  • 3/4 pound graham crackers
  • 4 Tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 2 sticks melted butter
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt
Filling:
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 can (14 ounces) condensed milk
  • 2/3 cup fresh Key lime juice
  • 1 lime , grated zest
Topping:
  • 1 cup heavy or whipping cream , chilled
  • 2 Tbsp. confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions:
To make graham cracker crust: Preheat the oven to 325°.
Break up the graham crackers, place in a food processor and process to crumbs. Add the melted butter, sugar and salt and pulse until combined. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan, forming an even layer on the bottom, sides and edge. Bake the crust for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow the crust to cool.
To make filling: While the crust is resting, in an electric mixer with the wire whisk attachment, whip the egg yolks and lime zest at high speed until fluffy, or 5 to 6 minutes. Gradually add the condensed milk and continue to whip until thick, 3 to 4 minutes longer. Lower the mixer speed and slowly add the lime juice until incorporated.
Pour the mixture into the crust and bake for 15 minutes, or until the filling has just set. Cool on a wire rack, and then refrigerate for 20 minutes.
To make topping: Whip the cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until nearly stiff. Evenly spread the whipped cream on top of the pie, and place in the freezer for 20 minutes prior to serving.

So....that's what's new around here. Wishing everyone a fabulous weekend......filled with good things, great food, lots of laughter and the Olympics!

  1. I'm so glad I saw this first thing this morning! Ok, here goes…I'm in love with the powder room! The paper, the fabric, the trim…it's all perfection! Love the treatment for the guest room over the queen bed…probably because its EXACTLY what we have over our king bed in our master bedroom! All of your fabric choices are great! Ours is in a Pierre Frey floral in browns, creams, etc..and a touch of blue with a brown and cream check and I've never gotten tired of it! It's been here for 15 years! Wow….wonder if my friends are tired of it? Anyway, your fabric choices are great….for some reason I'm leaning to the blue and cream! I LOVE the old brass hardware for the island! I think it's perfect! LOVE the planters for the pool! Wish I'd done that instead of 4 urn style planters! I would choose the first cherub…I think? I also love the three cherubs together! You will not go wrong with any of other! I'm sorry you aren't feeling great! However…it does sound nice to just sit around and be lazy! I can't wait to see these rooms finished if you will let us take a peek! I also forgot to tell you that they other day you showed a silk stripe for a something…I can't remember which room but it's the exact silk I have in my living room on the drapes! I've never gotten tired of it either! Hope your weekend stays productive! All the best!

  2. Good morning Tina,
Sorry you lost your voice though nothing seems to keep you down!!!
I love those brass pulls you are considering for your island and was wondering if you could tell me where to get them?
I adore the campaign style look.
    Thanks so much.
Everything looks like it is coming along beautifully...
    Happy weekend to you,
    Terri

  3. Hi Tina, hope you feel better soon. We all suffer from allergies (except my husband, lucky him) and its bad this summer. We all take the allergy shot, maybe something to consider if its allergies. But I am in agreement, nothing like a rainy weekend to stay in and nurse yourself back to good health.

OK, LOVE the powder room combinations, LOVE the idea of the hardware for the island, would love to know who makes it, its so substantial looking, and old world feeling. Great choices and I think it will look amazing in your magnificent kitchen, never tire of seeing it!

My husband loves key lime, so will have to try that recipe, and as far as the statuary, love the first box planter and for the cherubs, even though they are all so pretty, I love the idea of the pair that was shown in the last two pictures.

Lots to love here as always, have a good weekend and feel better.

  5. What a beautiful blog you have, I have been reading for a while now. I love your kitchen, especially your floor! I have just taken a lot of the old aged brass pulls off some of my cabinetry as I felt it took over. I love the end rails for the towels though - I just think your kitchen is so stunning it may distract if there is too much of it.
But then it is a little difficult with perspective in a photo.
    Congratulations on a stunning home!

  6. I like the choices for the powder room, it's an elegant combination.
The second option of blue and white is softer and what I'd prefer. Your home has a lot of blue and white - so this is something that resonates with you in a good way. Don't fight that - go with it.
The cherubs - my favs are the top two because of the patina. But I'm not sure how you could leave the other babies. They can be placed inside the house - a sun/garden room, on the floor next to a desk or favourite chair. I have one in my office - it works.

  7. Love the colors in the powder room...so pretty. I think it is a bad time for allergies...lots of pollen has been bad for my son. That brass hardware is gorgeous. Relax a bit, Tina!

  8. Good morning, always so happy to see a new post from you! They always start off my day with a smile. I think the hardware looks beautiful as is because its such a beautiful kitchen but can really see the new stuff too, I think it will give it even more of that old world feel if thats what you are after. Great idea for the long pull for towels!
Love the bathroom choices, so fresh. Love all the cherubs you cannot go wrong, really enjoy your blog and your taste is off the charts. I so look forward to all you do.

  9. Good morning Tina, I'm at the lake sipping coffee and doing a little catch up with friends. Lovely post this morning...I'm in love with your powder room selections...the soft yellow and grey and I'm a fool for checks. I also love the idea of the antique brass on your island. I agree that oil rubbed bronze just doesn't do anything on black cabinetry. Don't know how it could...but your home just keeps getting better, and better. Have a great weekend. Mona

  10. Tina, Everything is gorgeous. The kitchen floor, lighting, island...and I like the antique brass hardware. The trim and fabrics are absolutely perfect! But what grabbed me this morning....THAT CHANDELIER!!!!! ABSOLUTELY TO DIE FOR!
Hope you feel better, have two pieces of the yummy pie!

  11. Oh my goodness, Tina, your powder room will be to die for gorgeous!! And your new chandelier is absolutely beautiful! I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. Allergies here in Dallas are really a problem, too. I would seriously love a rainy day to stay in and watch the Olympics. That sounds so nice! Feel better!

  12. YEP! Go for that brass hardware on the island. Genius!!! It will pop, but in a good, subtle way.

  13. Hello Tina,

How are you feeling? Hopefully you are on the mend. Allergies or summer cold are still a pain in the butt. I hope you feel better soon.

I love all of your fabric choices for the bathroom. I think it looks great.

I am looking forward to seeing your progress, on all the other rooms.

    Be well, Elizabeth

  14. Powder room fabrics and trim are Classic, Understated & Happy - love them all! Antique Brass pulls add the "custom furniture" feel to the island - so nice! These pulls on your island will also accent your stove handles and the light fixtures! Such a good idea and testimony to how difficult it is to make every design decision prior to actually living in a home! Hope your weekend is relaxing!

  15. The wallpaper and fabrics for the bathroom are gorgeous Tina. The little tassels are perfect and the yellow adds warmth. I like the monochromatic look for the guest bedroom.. great color swatches!! It's tough to pick a favorite! As for the island - I would agree. Not too matchy-matchy :) The brass hardware would be perfect! I'm not familiar with the company .. so I will check it out. Thanks for sharing the Key Lime Pie recipe! Having family from the South, we all love it.

Hope you are feeling better soon. I'm exhausted after entertaining last night and have something else going today.. would love a day with nothing on the calendar! It's all good and I'd rather be busy and not :)

  16. I am loving the information and the thoughts and the pictures and the recipes and just Everything. So, I wonder....Is there a book in your future or already out there. I would love to sit in a pretty place and peruse a whole book with your musings and selected photographs. Thanks for your refreshment.

  17. So many decisions Tina.... Love the guest bedroom ideas... toile is so pretty and any of them would look wonderful with the contrasting fabrics... As for the hardware for your island... pretty fabulous... The garden and terrace pots would work anywhere...and that photo... I believe it's in Provence... just magical...

I hope you feel better, rest well and enjoy that key lime pie... After all the cooking and eating I have been doing in the last couple of weeks, I am starting to resemble a pie! xv

  18. The brass hardware on the island is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned! Go for it! Hope you are feeling better soon.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Tina, I agree with the brass hardware on the islands. My hardware on the islands is also brass since I loove how it coordinates with my Ilve. I do think the hardware for your towels is a great idea...but my mother has similar hardware and she has cautioned me against it only because she says as she walks by or works around her island her shirts, scarves all catch on the open edge of the hardware...so I am still hunting for options I will let you know what I find. I think the fabric choice for your guest room in picture one is calm, timeless and unique.

  20. Hi Tina! Have not commented in a while...have had such a hectic summer that blogging has taken an unfortunate back seat! Adore the fabric and trim for the powder room...of course Im a bit biased, as I love anything Barbara Barry does. Perfect choices! Love the dining room chandelier too...recently ordered a RL chandelier for a clients lake house, totally different style of course, but I always think his lighting is a great value for what you get.
I think you'll be very happy with the different pulls on the island...I see what you mean about the ORB ones not POPPING enough. And with the gold of the range, and (I think) the goldish tone of the lanterns, that will give you the pop without feeling like it came out of nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I say go for the different hardware on your island. It is a beautiful piece of furniture and that hardware will show it off so much better! I also love that outdoor dining scene. I think it is in Provence and it is perfect! Have a lovely Sunday x Sharon

  22. Love, love, love the chandelier! I'm showcasing
a couple of them on my post now but this one is
    gorgeous!

  23. We so love Key Lime pie.....however, and i pause for this,
try using crushed biscotti .....a winner instead of the expected
graham cracker crust....i use the one with the hazelnuts, no worries
since they get ground altogether... Yes, true whipping cream
is quite good....Lets not waste the egg whites. I whip these up with
the tarter and sugar added, then, like a baked Alaska it is popped into
a very hot oven for just a quick browning of these bodacious whites.
    ENJOY:) Anonymously, Contessa de Caxixa....

  24. Such beautiful fabrics and things! So hard to choose! The first blue toile would be my choice for the guest room, especially knowing how you love blue and white. However, the last piece of fabric would make a stunning room, too! All the cherubs are darling; no way to choose between them! I love the antiqued brass and think it would add to the beauty of your kitchen. Would you mind sharing the name of the manufacturer? Hope you are feeling better soon and your projects are completed without glitches!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Gorgeous chandelier and your husband's birthday planters are lovely! :)
Although I have a thing for blue and white in a bedroom I think I would pick the first toile fabric you have pictured. It is such a restful looking print. I would definitely choose that first pair of cherubs! I adore them!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tina love all the fabrics, not one I wouldn't love to see as a guest room, but somehow favor the first or last. Something very soft and tranquil about them. I am sure you will pick the perfect one.
Love the chandelier and your kitchen is so magnificent, I think it will look perfect either as is or with the new hardware. I just changed all my hardware from nickel to oil rubbed bronze incidentally and its amazing how much it can change the look.
    Feel better soon-

  30. First of all, hope you get some rest! I read that the heat and the high ozone in the air is causing symptoms that mimic allergies. I've been sneezing like crazy so that would explain things a bit. I love your trim for the powder room! It is soo perfect. I love all of the fabric choices you have for the guest room. You couldn't go wrong. The first blue and white toile stands out to me but maybe that's because I'm eyeing it for myself ;) As for the cherub statuaries - they are all darling! Don't you have 3 boys? (I couldn't remember if it was 3 or 2). You could pick the three cherubs and then name then for your boys, then when they have girls over you could show them the "statues of your boys" - or you could at least use that as a threat when they won't put their dishes away ;) Love your planters! I may have to get some when we get in the new house. Hope you have a relaxing weekend!

  33. TINA DEAR!

You probably have allergies. I too have been SNEEZING, I had a bout with a cough that was the result of a constant draining and tickle from all the pollen! I so hope you get better soon, but try not to talk and drink lots of tea!!!!

WOW, I am also at a crossroads with you about what cherubs to choose! ANYONE OF THEM really will look fantastic at your poolside! The hardware for your kitchen, again, anyone of the designs will work for the COLOR is what is important. You have chosen a good metal finish to POP OUT from the dark wood of your island. I KNOW...DECISIONS are tough! We just had a beautiful covered deck added on to our new addition and WE ARE LOVING IT. We could not decide whether to screen it in or leave it as is. I am leaning towards leaving it as is because from our French doors, the VIEW of our lush boxwood gardens is unobstructed and we want to leave it that way. I guess I will just have to use citronella candles!

BE WELL and have a fabulous day! Anita

  37. Tina your powder room is going to be amazing! I can’t wait to see the finished results. As for your kitchen I always have a hard time getting past the size when looking at your pictures, I’m a tad jealous! I had to laugh at your “birthday gift” for your husband…. GUILTY! I did that for/to my husband this year for his birthday. Pulling more of his taste into our dining room but something I love as well but he still thinks it’s all about him…lol. I am so going to try that key lime pie since it’s the husbands’ favorite. As for your allergies I have them right now too since the golden rod is blooming everywhere….ugh!

  39. Hi Tina! Hope you're feeling better. I say definitely GO FOR IT and the knobs...you have the scale in the kitchen to pull it off, not to mention the dark color on the island feeling a bit more masculine and looks like it will tie in beautifully with the stove...I think it would be a great addition!

  41. Wow....lot's going on here. I'm lovin' it !!
Great choice on your powder room window treatments and trim. As far as fabric choices for the master...I'm a sucker for the firt choice 'the Garden Toile' in pale acqua. I have the same fabric in 'Parchment' and I have always loved that pattern. Wow, that chandelier is something else. Gorgeous. Although it's almost bigger than my entire dining room, I'm sure it will be perfect in yours. Ha ha .
Now onto the kitchen/pulls question. I say: "Grab the BRASS ring" Go for it.
I LOVE LOVE the planters you picked out. But of course, you and I have much the same taste. In fact this lattice pattern is exactly what I envisioned you would have at the front door.
And finally, that lovely 'alfresco' picture: well, it's definately going in my inspiration files. I must have those chairs. And that house...and that tree....and ....

  49. Tina,

I hope you are feeling better. Could you have a sinus infection? I know so many people who are suffering currently from severe allergies. Have you considered having your Doctor write you a script for a nasal spray such as Flonase? It works wonders for severe allergies.

I have oil rubbed bronze hardware on my island, which I love. My island is a creamy paint with an espresso distressed glaze so the hardware really pops. I see what you mean about it just kind of blending in with your island. Could you order a 2 or 3 pieces of the new hardware to try it out before ordering all of it?

Yes, yes and yes to key lime pie!!!! xoxo

  50. Great post as usual! I love Cherub #1, but am rubbish at hardware, so can't wait to hear/see what you decide.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What a beautiful post. Love the fabrics/trim/wallpaper...perfect. I love any pictures of your kitchen, so beautiful. I can see your point on the hardware, though it looks beautiful I think changing out to the brass would really make it pop as more a piece of furniture, plus it will tie into the brass on your range, and I think the lanterns? I think its a great idea.

The cherubs and planters are all very classic, you cannot go wrong with any. And last love key lime but have never made it, maybe its time I try, my husband would think of me as a hero!

Feel better Tina, around here allergies are really really bad, and my kids are suffering but get the allergy shot, maybe see if they are allergies?

Thank you for sharing the beautiful pictures at the end as well as your Key Lime Pie. That was especially generous. Your kitchen is so magnficent, can see it either way but do think the hardware shown would really accentuate the island in a beautiful way.
LOVE your fabrics/wallpaper ideas for guest room, first and last are my favorite and that powder room will be heavenly.
Hope you feel better, my daughter believe it or not had the flu a few weeks back, so take good care of yourself. People dont' think you can get that sick in the summer but you can. Feel better.

  54. That has got to be one of the prettiest trims I've ever seen! Could not be more perfect with the wallpaper and check. I also can't wait to see this room finished. You are a woman on a mission Tina! I mean I stare and analyze and think and wonder for weeks and months over one stupid thing. You are seriously awesome at knowing what you like when you see it. I have a sickness where I have to see every single possible option before making a decision. I want a look at every single fabric in the entire store, for fear of missing the one that might be better than the one I picked! It's exhausting and takes some of the fun out of it.. and it doesn't work anyway! I still find things I like better RIGHT after I cover something! UGH!
