Say a prayer for Teddy......

Good morning. Yesterday was a really really rough day. Really tough. Teddy was attacked by a trio of dogs, (neighbors dogs all belonging to one owner from a distance) they are I believe some kind of hybrid wolf mix, not sure but they look eerily like a pack of wolves with very tall skinny legs and long snouts....they ferociously marched onto our property and took full advantage of my precious little Teddy, who was just sitting in the grass minding his business.  We didn't realize at first how bad it was. But at the vet, after they shaved the areas that were affected, we soon realized that he had been bitten multiple times, and had received several serious deep bites all the way to the muscle. By the time we got to the vet, his fever spiked all the way past 105 and excess fluid started to build all over his little body. He was having a hard time walking and was so lethargic, it was incredibly painful to see my little buddy like that. Just writing this is so unbelievably hard. To know Teddy is to love him, everyone at the animal hospital adores him, they could not believe that despite the tremendous pain he was in, that his little tail was still wagging while we were all petting him (while he was being examined)....that's how sweet he is!

Bottom line he is having surgery in the morning, last night his condition was too fragile, his fever too high to put him under general anesthesia,  but hopefully this morning he will be good to go. He will remain in the hospital for at least 3-4 days,  as he will have several drains and though we desperately want him home,I know that's the best place for him. The house feels eerily quiet without him. Walking into the kitchen is just not he same without him there to greet me, cooking seems boring and mundane without his curious little face at my side wanting samplers as I go along, there is no "taste tester" like Teddy, my morning walks will come to a halt as I have no interest in them if he can't be with me. I cannot imagine his amazingly sweet disposition and adorable face not here for the next four days. I am trying to channel my extreme anger and turn it into something positive for Teddy's sake.

I know everything will be OK. You really don't realize just how important a dog is to you, until something happens, just how much a part of your family they are until something occurs that shakes you up to your core and you realize that your family is not your family without them. Well this has really shaken me up more than words can say. Somehow, it just doesn't seem appropriate today to post about the things I normally love to post about...not when my heart is aching and is somewhere else. So today I am taking the day off. I will keep you posted. I am praying and hoping for great news today . Promise to update you tomorrow. Thank you and wishing you all a wonderful day!

Teddy, I cannot wait to see you just lounging about as you do best next to the flower beds, just "doing your thing". I love you dear sweet boy and cannot wait until you come home!

UPDATE AS OF 3:40PM.....He is comfortable, on heavy duty painkillers, stable, wagging his tail (amazing that his sweet personality shines through even while going through such trauma), they were able to put in two additional drains today, so he has a total of 3 now, they did not operate today, because his body is getting rid of the excess fluid of which is there is a great deal. They will access tomorrow how things are looking and if its a good idea to operate tomorrow. His fever is thankfully down and they are doing to do stomach xrays. We are going see him at around 6pm. Fingers crossed that all continues to go well. I cannot thank you enough for this TREMENDOUS OVERWHELMING outpouring of support, I was blown away when I came onto to see nearly 200 comments and tons of emails overflowing my email box, thank you, thank you, thank you.....they truly touched my heart. Its been a rough 24 hours and you better believe I will give you en ear full of this owner and his pack of horrendous vicious dogs and whats going on over there as soon as all this goes away...........will continue to keep you updated. I am confident he is going to be just fine. Thank you again.......

  1. Tina, I am SO SO SO sorry this happened to Teddy. I feel like I know him from my visits here with you. I feel like we are all old friends:) I will pray as I go about my day today. Please keep us posted. It makes me so sad to hear this story but this is the 3rd story recently that I have heard about dogs being off leash and attacking other innocent dogs who were minding their own business . Why is this happening?

  3. Tina, I have tears in my eyes reading this as I feel I have gotten to know Teddy ever since he was known as "Inspector Teddy" since you were building your beautiful home! He is so adorable and part of the reason we decided on getting a golden ourselves! I am so terribly sorry. I will say a prayer for quick recovery and successful surgery. I can imagine how shaken up you must be, that is so horrible. Poor little guy. Wishing him well and sending you a big hug. Please update us on him and how he is doing. Hope you get some much needed rest and hope today things turn around and you get some good news! I am very sorry.

  5. Dear Tina, This is so very sad. I can't see the keys to type... so many tears. I know how you feel. We love our Charlie and Lucy. I will be thinking of you and Teddy. Please give us an update today, if you can. We will be praying for you and your sweet Teddy.

  6. This just hurts my heart, my thoughts go out to you and your sweet Teddy. Can anything be done to prevent this from happening again? I dread to think what could happen if a smaller dog or even worse, a small child, got in the way of this pack of dogs!

  7. Tina,

I'm so sad to hear this! I really adore Teddy... I feel so much for you and your family. But have faith that he'll get better really, really soon!

    I'm praying for that!

I'm typing through tears. I hope something is done so this does not happen again to Teddy or any other dog.

  9. I am in tears,i am so sorry this happened to your darling boy and i am going to light a candle and say a prayer for dear Teddy, you must be heartbroken.
I watched three Rottweilers round up a poor small white dog on the beach once,i was on the cliff and that poor little thing didn't stand a chance, thankfully the little dogs owner beat them off with a stick it truly is heart breaking and owners that have dogs with pack mentality need to keep them on their own property and invest in muzzles to protect sweet dogs like Teddy,
Sending lots of love to you Teddy xxxx

  10. No! I can't believe that happened. I'll be thinking about you and Teddy today. I'm sure that his surgery will be successful and he'll be good as new (after a little rest). I always have little scenarios that play out in my head of things I wish I'd said or I'd like to do but never would (I know, it's strange). Right now I'm punching the neighbor and his dogs in the face.

  13. Everyone who read your heart-breaking account will be thinking about Teddy today. Veterinary science is amazing nowadays, and I pray that he will soon be home with you again and good as new! About six months ago our precious cat was badly bitten, yet within a few days the antibiotics she was given brought her an unbelievably quick recovery - our pets are more resilient than we are! Take care, and let us all know how he gets on.

  16. Oh Tina, I am so shocked by this. I can only imagine what you must be going through right now. Teddy's sweetness shows in every photo that you post of him here. My Ben means the world to me so I understand everything that you wrote. I really believe that good energy/prayer helps and I am sure that Teddy is going to have a lot coming his way from all over the world, including from me. Sending you strength and hope. Please keep us posted.

  17. SO sorry Tina. He is so adorable and you can tell he is just the sweetest dog, look at that face! I would dog sit for him anytime if I lived nearby. We have two goldens and they are just the best. Just great dispositions. So sorry he had to endure such a horrible attack. Praying for a swift recovery and successful day today. I know he will be fine, they recover so quickly, and modern medicine is remarkable but I know its so horrible for us dog owners to endure. Sending you my love and best wishes, my friend.

  18. Teddy, Oh how we love to see your sweet face on your Mommys blog. You are so loved by your family and friends. Be brave Teddy, let the Doctors take care of you, and rest and get well so you can go home to those that love and miss you. Praying for your recovery Teddy. Love, Susan, and Emma (15 Year Old Golden Girl from Texas).

  19. Tina, my heart is breaking for your sweet Teddy. I grew up with goldens and they are the most gentle and kind breed . I will be praying for his recovery and pain management. It is so hard not to feel anger towards the owner of those other dogs. Will they be forced to keep their dogs leashed or fenced in from now on, ugh?!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tina, there are no words to express the mixed emotions. My heart goes out to you and your fur child, Teddy. We have goldens and volunteer in a golden rescue organization, so I understand everything you are feeling. He is getting the best care medically and emotionally, and he gains strength and comfort from your love. Hang in there, Teddy needs you. I truly hope once Teddy is on the mend, something is done with the attack dogs and their owners.

  21. Tina - I don't post very often but I am such a fan of your blog. When I read this, chills ran through my body. I am so very sorry this happened to Teddy and I pray, hope and will be thinking of him and your family today. The mere image of your description brought me to tears as I was reminded myself of being attacked by just one dog 13 year ago. This angers me greatly, the owner of these 3 dogs was not being responsible for his/her dogs...there are no excuses, this should have never happened. Teddy is so well loved, he will pull through. Sending much strength and support your way. ~Tammy

  22. Poor, sweet Teddy!!! I hope he has a speedy recovery. Goldies make the best dogs, they have a fabulous disposition, and I can see that in your pictures. I hope you called the animal services in your area to report these hounds. They are probably bred to attack. Get them prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They should not be allowed to roam free from now on and should be made to wear muzzles as soon as they step out the door. What if this would have been a child? Mind you, in my book, attacking a dog is just as bad, they are so important in our lives.

Please do keep us updated on your sweetie.

  30. Just reading this I began to cry. Poor Teddy. I too hope that you called the police, especially since the pack came onto your property. Where we use to live some of the dogs would pack with coyotes and would come around our house. There was only one time that I encountered them as I was going out to my car. Luckily, my brother was home and shot his gun into the air. Very scary, I wouldn't let my daughter play outside alone. We moved to town soon after. Recently, our neighbor was planning to install an invisible fence, which I quickly talked them out of...it's good to keep the dog in your yard, but other dogs can get in as well. That is no good. Prayers for Teddy!

  31. Oh no Tina... this is terrible... My labbie Smirnoff is just as loveable and gentle and I could not imagine him like this so I can just feel for you. Beam me up for a big hug and to be with Teddy! I would be seriously angry as well and hope you have taken them to task so that this does not occur in the future again. Viscious animals should not be allowed to roam in any case!!???

My doggies are so precious to me and I would be devestated as well. Praying for you and Teddy! Mwah

  32. My heart aches. I love when you post with Teddy. Anyone that has an animal in their lives knows the bond that is created. We have a lab that had been attacked, and while physically he healed, he changed around other dogs. He use to be game to play with anyone, and now he is wary. We are all with you, and look forward to seeing Teddy home with you:)

  34. Reading this I'm somewhere between anger at neighbors who let their dogs roam and tears for your sweet Teddy. I love dogs and we usually have one. It's one thing to let your pet off your property if its gentle, but dogs behaving like wolves is a different story. I know your Teddy is a sweet gentle pet, just by looking at his pics. My son has a huge lab like that wouldn't hurt a fly. I know your heart is heavy, yes we love our pets and hurt when they hurt. I pray he has a full recovery. I'm so sorry Tina.

  36. Am an AVID RELIGIIOUS (almost obsessive reader) hehe of your blog and have turned many of my equally designed obsessed friends onto it too, but have only commented once or twice. BUT this has me outraged! What in the world is going on with that owner and his three MONSTERS!!!!!!! I do hope you have contacted the police and your local SPCA and look up your local "dangerous law acts" and see how it applies to your area. Please in Teddy's honor do not hestiate to act, Tina. What they did is horrendous and they will continue to do this to others, trust me, if they did it once they will do it again. This is their nature, not a one time incident. Your sweetie pie had no chance and it is the very nature of goldens to just be so sweet and passive and kind to all they meet, just having them nearby is a threat. You must act and deal with this, I say it as a concerned dog lover myself. I am so very sorry you had to experience something so horrible and pray for Teddy's quick recovery. Please give him a great big bear hug from me, and tell him all of cyberwold is rooting for him and I cannot wait to hear that he is at his beautiful home safe and sound, I know he is getting good care and is so very loved. He is such a beautiful little guy, with so much love to give, you can see it with his eyes. Sending you a hug too Tina! Hang in there, and please do keep up in the loop.

  40. OH, how awful. I hate to hear about a pet being hurt or sick. Those sound like coyotes that got him. Are you sure it was a neighbor's dogs? 42. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Teddy today! I know how you feel, our pets are like our children in so many ways. I too had a 'Teddy' to share my days. My Teddy was Izzy, a 10 & 1/2 year old yellow lab who would cock her head and look at me when I talked to her, she would sit in my sewing room with me for hours just keeping me company. It seems like yesterday wasn't a good day for a lot of us, our Izzy went in for exploratory surgery yesterday and didn't make it out. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your Teddy today, I hope he comes home soon!

  79. These "dogs" sound like they may be a coyote or coyote mix? They are very active right now as it's mating season. Regardless, if they belong to someone, they need to be put down. 83. Darling, I can feel your distress...just spend as much time with him as you can even when he's at the vet because he will miss all of you too. Damn those neighbors for allowing their dogs to run wild, sounds like a pack-mentality, doesn't it? I'm praying too. All of us who have dogs know exactly what you're going through. Sending love, Tina....

  92. Oh my Goodness!! Could they have been coyotes? I know they run rampant around here. If not, then please file a police report! If this is a hybrid, the owners need to have the dogs confined or put down. This could have been a small child! I am so, so, sorry. Our pets love us unconditionally, and they are family. Sending prayers for Teddy and your family.

It took surgery, a lot of TLC and time but today the signs of the attack are almost unnoticeable. She was so lucky. I am praying for Teddy's complete recovery! He is beautiful.

  102. Poor Teddy! I am a veterinarian, and have treated so many animal attacks. The key for Teddy is placement of multiple drains, strong antibiotics (IV if necessary), and good pain control. Don't be alarmed if he looks worse (with the drains and bruising) before he looks better. I once treated a pomeranian attacked by a cougar. I've never seen such horrid wounds, and yet he survived. Ironically, this little dogs name is Bacon =) I'm sure Teddy will heal and do great, especially since he's so loved! Sending healing thoughts and love n' cuddles his way!

  118. I am crying and shaking with outrage and anger. My daughter's boyfriend's male golden was attacked by a 20 lb jack russell; Tucker was too gentle to fight back, but fortunately we were able to pull the jack off with no real damage. One determined little dog can kill a bigger dog, so three is devastating. A dog fight is also one of the scariest things to witness! I know when you've gotten past the shock you will do the right thing as far as pursuing punishment for that negligent owner - otherwise, those dogs WILL kill other innocent animals. You have a large property, and it's hard to keep pets safe - as a previous commenter said, an invisible fence would not have stopped this. That's why we have a large portion of our 2 1/2 acres around the back yard fenced for my three dogs. We used 6 ft tall black iron which allows us to see the trees and kind of disappears into the landscape, and would keep all but very small animals out. Praying for Teddy...

  121. I am sooo sorry to hear this!! Thankfully you were there when this happened and could get medical attention right away. This same thing happened to my King Charles Spaniel about 2 years ago. The wounds didn't appear to be all that bad until we took her to the vet and they shaved the areas, just like you said they did with Teddy. Her wounds were very deep and needed surgery as well. When we were finally able to bring her home, she had multiple tubes coming out everywhere, scared me to death! She survived and now there are no noticeable marks anywhere on her body or face! It sounds like Teddy is in very competent hands and will pray for a quick recovery for him. Please give us an update after his surgery if you can...we all feel like we know him through your wonderful stories of him. Praying for you too Tina, I know he's so very special to you and your family!

As a sidenote: It makes me so angry when people keep dangerous pets! My 5-lb toy poodle, who I lost last year to heart failure after 12+ years, was once attacked by a wolf/Shepherd mix and narrowly saved by my husband being there when it happened.

  139. Tina, I am so very sorry that this has happened to Teddy (and to your family). I feel like I know sweet Teddy and love him just from my visits to your blog…. It’s like we are old friends. It’s true that our furry babies become such an important part of our daily life and an intricate part of our family – I understand all too well how his presence is missed at home (as well as here). And just remember, he is missing you and your family too - so try to spend as much time with him at the vet.
It makes me sad (I am crying as I write this) to hear such a story. Why did this happen? What is being done about the attack?

  176. Dear Tina, I have felt the horror, pain, fear and outrage you have felt with three of my dogs over a lifetime of being a dog owner. All attacks happened on my property from neighboring dogs with ignorant owners at fault.
I have Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. One of my little guys had to have open heart surgery to repair a tear. My other little guy lost eight teeth and has permanent nerve damage at the base of his skull. After the first attack, two more came from the same German Shepard over a period of one year. Each time I called the police and made a formal report. The owners were never called to task and only fined $75.00. I found out the hard way my State (Illinois) does not have a dog bite law. I also found out that the police had recorded each of my calls as a barking dog nuisance to protect the other dog owner. Very corrupt. I had to get a freedom of information act to find that out. We hired an attorney to get as much done as possible to protect our dogs and property. The other owners are very high profile in my small community and extremely wealthy. We persisted even though we were threatened financially by these people. We were able to demand a certified dog behaviorist be hired to train the dog but could not demand an enclosure to keep it on their property. We ran out of money. I contacted the attorney in San Francisco who prosecuted the couple whose dogs killed a women in their building. He told me the only way I could successfully sue for any restitution is if the dog killed me. Legislation is the only way to stop this ignorance. I contacted my local newspaper and my story ran on the front page exposing the police corruption. That was three years ago. To this date we still do not have a dog bite law and the German Shepard is allowed to be outside all day unattended. God Bless you and your Teddy

  180. this is so sad and has me in tears! Teddy always seems so sweet in your pictures, I feel like I know him. How awful that the owner of the dogs lets them roam free to attack. Can you also imagine what they would do if they came upon a small child? I pray for a speedy recovery for your sweet baby. I hope you will charge this owner with endangerment. The wild dogs should be put to sleep. I love animals but these dogs are just too dangerous. Were you the one who stopped the attack? that must have been so scary for you & for Teddy. God Bless Teddy with a quick recovery!

Just hope this isn't going to happen again, and that the neighbor is given notice his dogs are to be in kennels. OMG I would be furious and upset out of my mind!!! Sorry !!! xo

  184. Oh my heart aches for you-he is so cute and sweet- we recently had to put our golden down and we adored him so much so I know just how your heart aches for him to be at ease and recover. i just said a prayer that God will heal him.

  185. Oh Tina, I am so so sorry for you and Teddy! We have two dogs, one a Golden who is just as sweet and trusting as your Teddy, I would be furious if anything like that ever happened to them. It can be scary even just walking your dog these days as there are some scary and aggressive dogs around! Here in NZ, dogs that bite people are put to sleep straight away no matter whether it's a first offence or not, I don't know what happens if they bite other dogs though :( All the best with your beautiful Teddy, I know he will be okay too! xo K

  186. Poor baby I hope he is out of pain soon and back home. I think I would involve the police in this vicious attack. Some people just will not care. Good Luck!

  187. My partner and I have been following your blog, but never left any comment. But this day, I will have to say that we are so glad to know that Teddy is doing well. We love our dog so much that it hurts to know your Teddy was injured. All day long our hearts were heavy and keep hoping Tedding would be ok. Thank you for the update. It made us feel better. Our dogs are not just dogs. They are our children and forever companion. Please keep us posted.

  190. So sorry to hear about your sweet dog. Although you know your dog's attackers were neighbour dogs, coyotes were the first thing that came to mind when I read your description. They look exactly as you describe. They've become rampant where we live (a bit in the country in southern Ontario), and neighbours here regularly lose their cats. Coyotes are frighteningly bold, and have even gathered on back decks to stare in at dogs/cats in houses! An 8-year-old girl was attacked in her fenced back yard earlier this year in Toronto, in broad daylight. Hopefully, since you know where the attackers came from, you can force their owners to pay for Teddy's hospital care.

  194. Oh Tina My thoughts and prayers are with you ,your family and Teddy. As you can see not only have you become a friend to us all. but we have all fallen in love with Teddy. My daughter and I were chased when walking our dog about 4 years ago in a nearby condo complex that borders the woods by our house. At first we thought it was wild dogs, but turns out a pack of mixed coyote/wild dogs live nearby. We have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Brandi who is now 8 and she is never let out off our deck and only when we are home and we have the deck which is high up fenced at the top and bottom of the stairs. We have been chased by dogs in our neighborhood when on walks and our town has a leash law. I carry a heavy walking stick and pepper spray whenever we walk and would never hesitate to use both to protect us. So sad that not everyone is a responsible dog owner. Let us all pray that Teddy comes through and that the beasts and their equally vicious owner meet their due.

  196. Poor Tina and poor Teddy. I am just seeing this and I am so very sorry. I am sure you are in as much pain as if this was one of your children. In fact, I do consider my furry babies my children. Please keep us updated, and I hope Teddy gets better and better everyday and is home to you soon. I also hope karma plays a very large role in the owner of those dogs. Give 'em hell. Hang in there, Barb

  197. I save your blog to last, you know... like dessert...and now I am heart-broken for you. What a life-changing tragedy. Security for Teddy, and you and your yard, now stands in abeyance. I am just sick. Our sweet, loving, beloved creatures hold such a huge part of our hearts. Prayers for Teddy and for all of you.
    Huge warm hugs, Tina.

  198. How awful! I can imagine him sitting in the yard just like the picture above with his bandana around his neck, minding his busniess. Such a sweet, sweet face. I hope Teddy's back on his feet and healthy in no time at all! Prayers to Teddy, you and your family.
