Good morning, hope everyone is having a great weekend. We are experiencing our first round of true fall weather, and I have to say I am loving it. Brisk, cool, beezy....now this is what I have been waiting for!! Today is a short post on seven spectacular rooms/spaces that I just love for one reason or another. Also I have another round of questions to answer so thought it is easier if I just answer them as I get them..
1. Are we polishing or honing the marble? Is there a difference in how it wears? Well, I am not claiming to be a marble expert by any stretch but we are honing all of our marble in the kitchen, butlers and pantry. First I love the look of honed marble, it makes it look kind of old world and the bottom line as I have been told, the key either way is to be sure you get a really good heavy duty sealer and use it 1-2 times a year. This applies for either finish.
2. I got several people asking my about my personal style, how do I like to dress and if it mimics my style in decor (classic, elegant traditional) and what are my favorite brands? I had to laugh a little at this because lately anyone who thinks of me as dressing well would be very disappointed, seems lately I live in sweat/yoga pants, a basic t shirt, and sneakers (sad but true). But I do have my great looking Ralph Lauren jacket over it! Seriously, yes do love classic dressing. I would say my style is classic traditional tailored elegance with a little twist. Some of my favorite brands are Tory Burch (very much my style), Tibi, Milly, J Crew (for basics), Theory to name a few. I love great cashmere sweaters and cardigans, blouses, lacy tops, tailored straight front pants, beautiful scarves, tailored fitted jackets, ballerina flats and riding boots. Am also a bit of a handbag fanatic. Those are some of the pieces that I love and wear often. Of course many of these items are ugh....lets just say "on hiatus" in my closet taking a nice long vacation while yours truly gets her priorities back and starts losing 15 -20 lbs that shes gained due to "house stress". Yes, it IS so convenient to blame that house :)
3. What will I be using as backsplash in the kitchen/pantry? We are actually working on this now as a matter of fact. I am thinking of going classic and simple, ideally want to get beveled subway tiles that are oversized either 6x10 or 6x12. Then maybe frame out a herringbone design above the stove. Want it to be a beautiful but subtle backdrop to everything else going on in the kitchen.
4. Did I or am I working with a designer? No, its all me!! I was doing interior design work for clients for a few years before we started building our home, and despite having the good fortune of being offered several jobs turned them down to fully concentrate on this house. My opinions are strong and pretty definite on how I want things to look so I realized early on, that I wasn't going to want to work with anyone else alongside me ( did briefly consider it and spoke to/interviewed a few designers). One of them even told me that he thinks I could do it on my own as he loved my ideas/vision and I realized he was right, at least up until this point. However I did hire someone who is a master at room planning/space planning to help with layouts, sizes of furniture, etc and I do bounce things off of him from time to time and am sure there will be more of this as we step up the decorating process now....it might take a little longer this way but at least I will get exactly what I want!
5. What color stain are we using in the family room and what was used in the breakfast room? They are both custom stains, we played around with several options and tweaked them until we got the formula where we wanted it to be. In the breakfast room, we did a "limed" finish on top of the stain.
6. Do I recommend putting bathtbus in all the bathrooms for new construction? No I don't, unless it happens to work for you and your lifestyle and you have kids who specifically really want bathtubs. We have 3 sons who all like showers, but my youngest who is an athlete likes to soak in a tub, so we put one in his bathroom and in the guest bath. I think its wise for resale to have at least one other bathroom with a tub but I certainly do not think its necessary to have one in every bathroom.
7. What are my feelings on TV's above the fireplace? I got this several times too. In a perfect world, I wouldn't do it but sometimes you have to bend the rules and make concessions. In our bedroom, we are doing this, but we have a beautiful frame and woodworking around it and I am confident that when the room is done, the focal point will not be the TV but many other pretty elements in the room. It happens to be dead center so it was the logical spot for the TV. Again in our family room, our architect was against it, but it was the perfect spot in terms of how the room lays out with furniture to have the TV above the mantle. So the compromise was we installed a hydraulic unit above the fireplace that will be part of the wood panelling that can conceal it when and if we want. This was my hubby's thing, putting it on the record that I had no problem with seeing the TV, after all it is a family room, you expect it!!
Now onto 7 spectacular rooms.....Have a favorite?
I am in love with this space, the colors are so beautiful! Heirloom Philosophy
Beautiful sitting area/vestibule by Barry Dixon
Love the earthy tones in this spectacular room, the windows, the door, ahhh.....
Dan Carithers got it right in this vision of a kitchen
Love this bathroom! Old world but fresh.
Blue and white, the perfect crowning touch
A perfect sitting room, don't you think? Traditional Home
Which is your favorite? Always love to know! Wising you a wonderful and relaxing Sunday!
Good morning Tina.
ReplyDeleteThanks for answering the questions, gotta admit I was kind of curious about how you like to dress as your taste is so refined, love the brands you mentioned too. All great ones.
Always great to know more about your house and how you have decided to make certain decisions, you have superb taste so think you were wise to go alone on this, seems and sounds like you really know what you are doing!
Lovely rooms, all of them, that last sitting area is perfect.
Good Morning- I have a houseful of company and while the ovens are at work I am catching a minute of alone time before anyone else is up.
ReplyDeleteLoved this post- I am a RL gal, too...especially the blazers..but I almost ALWAYS wear skirts~
It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job pulling everything together. I have done that several times although not on the grand scale that you are working at. I am so tickled to see someone I know get to build, and love, a house like this one.
I love the first room AND the second room the best. They are grand rooms, aren't they?
oooppps...Top oven is calling my name- the quiches are done! Have a wonderful Sunday- I love reading your blog- but you know that! xo Diana
That bathroom is amazing! I am sure all of your choices are going to be stunning and I am dying to see the finished outcome of your (and mine) dream home! My husband insisted on putting a flat screen above our fireplace and what I hate about it the most is when Christmas rolls around it takes away from me decorating the mantel. xo
ReplyDeleteGIVE ME THAT KITCHEN!!!! And I think I can make mine look like that with just a change in the COLOR! It is an ocre at the moment, but my hood that looks like this, would look grand in gray! And I love your "style"!!! If I were doing the work you are doing, I would be wearing sweat pants too! SEE YOU TOMORROW DEAR ONE...I will be late as I am at school all day! Anita
ReplyDeleteHi Tina - I love that bathroom - what a cool, surprising floor! Very "sensational"! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you answered these questions! Here is one for your next round, how big is your kitchen and how high are the ceilings? I love the scale, it seems huge. We are just now finalizing plans for our own build, not nearly as large but a good sized home and being someone who really uses her kitchen and loves cooking I want to be sure I am making it big enough.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful rooms. My favorite is the first and third one. They just look like rooms that have stood the test of time and still look beautiful. Have a wonderful day.
My foavorite is picture n°1!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday Tina!

I liked the next to last image with the tall chest of drawers. It looks like an inviting room, and what do they have in all of those drawers? Kind of interesting that the drawers are all the same size, instead of graduated~It makes it unique. I thought a few of the rooms seemed dark and almost dreary, and living in New England I crave the natural light as the seasons change.
ReplyDeletewell maybe they weren't all the same size after all, lol. Just how my mind took it in~! Coffee please.....
ReplyDeleteLove this! It's yet another way to know more about you! :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a great Sunday!

I always love Barry Dixon's work, but my favorites are the kitchen & the chest of drawers with the blue & white collection on top. Ah........
ReplyDeleteGreat answers to awesome questions! I need to lose a few pounds too since I started working! All I do is eat the candy I bought to put in the treasure box at school!
ReplyDeleteThank you for answering your readers' questions so thoughtfully and honestly, Tina. Your Sunday posts are always so interesting and informative.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day,
~ Wendi ~
love the 3rd image and you have exquisite taste.
ReplyDeletequestion, does your husband get involved in any of the selection or is it all up to you? Love to know!
Happy weekend.

OMG! That first room just lit me up! Those 2 urns on those 2 tables: EXQUISITE! Complete PERFECTION! Thanks for sharing!!! As always, another enjoyable post. Drop those pounds and get back to your "playing weight"! You deserve to feel good about yourself at every turn.
ReplyDeleteThe second photo for sure, by Barry Dixon! Love the rug, love the pillows, love everything about it... would move right in!
ReplyDeleteJan
PS: Where did you find that photo of the Dan Carithers kitchen? I love it and have never seen it. I thought I'd exhausted all photos with his name attached to them on the internet... do tell!
ReplyDeleteJan
Photos 2,3 and 4.....wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteI love them all! The first one perfectly evokes a fall mood - it beckons. The 3rd is so inviting and approachable, but still elegant. Have a great Sunday!

Good morning Tina, Love what your going to be doing to the kitchen. Its exactly what I would like to do to mine. These images are breath taking and so inspirational. I love the little twig tables. We have used them in a couple of jobs. Thanks for sharing..
ReplyDeleteHard to choose Tina!! I love the 6th with the blue and white above the exquisite chest!! Love seeing unique furniture. I could easily choose several others!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting and entering my designer pillow Giveaway!

tina my love,
ReplyDeleteyou need NO designer!!

I'm always drawn to anything with blue and white, and topping weathered wood? That gets my vote for sure!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is I hope your house is on tour someday for all your followers! Seriously, I love your passion. We recently went through a full remodel, nothing on this scale in terms of size, but like you I know what I want and what I like...Our builder talked us into recessed lighting and I can't even look at the ceilings without getting annoyed. I have never used marble, always honed black granite because marble scares me. I hope you'll keep us posted as to how you like it and how it wears. I love marble so much more than granite. I have always used subway tile, but never thought to use a herringbone pattern...herringbone anything is a favorite of mine...it's going to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteDuring the year of our remodel I basically wore black lulu lemon every single day...I would come home from the house, (after stopping at the market) and then notice a hand print on my backside from the construction dust....goodness!
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

I loved the earth toned living room - the trim around the sofas, the tufted ottoman, the circle molding above the door (how unique), and the beams. Don't feel bad, I gained 12 lbs (still there) while building our beach house. We finished our beach house in February and I was able to enjoy it this summer but, sadly, was embarrassed to wear my swim suit!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the Dan Carithers kitchen with the two beautiful black and white chairs and table. Normally I don't like dark woods but this is charming, comfortable and full of style. I'll have my espresso there today.#4
ReplyDeleteI love all the natural elements in #1, and that comfy little doggie bed under the table is quite welcoming. However, I choose #2 because I have a fondness for Barry Dixon's aesthetic and use of color...pinks, reds, oranges - LOVE!
ReplyDeleteOn a personal note you're fondness for flats and riding boots makes me think you're at least 5'8" tall (crazy assumption?), and can carry the extra weight and still look fine. If you're 5'2" and under, I apologize for not making you feel any better :)
Especially like the room in the first pic. Would love to have a pair of those urns!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading over your questions and answers, all good ones, the lines you mentioned to dress in are some of my favorites too, especially J Crew. Love their stuff.
ReplyDeleteThese rooms are all so amazing, I do love them all but especailly the 3rd picture of the living room and that glorious bathroom. Really fabulous. Have a nice afternoon.
Hi, Tina,
ReplyDeleteThese images are all beautiful. I love image 1 with those fabulous stone urns filled with apples and the gilded frame hung over an old tapestry. It really is only a fragment of a room so I think I am entitled to pick another and that would be image 3. I love the color scheme, the fireplace screen and that unusual mahogany door surround with a display area above. Then again, I also like the kitchen in image 4. Love that hood and the color of the cabinets. I also like the blue and white collection on top of that lovely cupboard. But if you put my feet to the fire, it would have to be image 1.
Thanks for the inspiration and for answering all of our many questions. You are a very generous person.
Best...Victoria
Always fun learning more about our blog friends but how you dress? Really?...lol. I'm with you I don't care for TVs above the fireplace and when the husband wanted one in our living room I said no way! I don't really watch TV and hate seeing the things anyway. Love that first room with the tapestry and those urns, love them! I hope you've enjoyed your Sunday!
ReplyDeleteHi! I have been reading your blog sporadically via forwarded emails from my mother in law for quite some time now. I thought it was about time i clicked on over and visited for real :) I am an interior designer and actually helping my inlaws design a house right now. I love all the details going into your magnificent home. I can't wait to see more and probably should take a tour back through the process...these are the things I LOVE. And, yes, even interior designers have to bounce ideas off other trusted peers/professionals every now and again. I think we all inspire each other, and maybe keep each other honest...ha! Happy blogging and happy FALL...well, almost fall for us here on the gulf coast :)

Tina-
ReplyDeleteThese images are so beautiful. I will have to go back and see the post I missed on the updates.
have a wonderful evening.

Thanks for answering the questions all of us have! I love all the rooms featured, but somehow when I scrolled up to see the first one it seemed to really speak to me. Photo #3 is also pretty spectacular. Glad you didn't use a designer/decorator. This would have been such a waste of money, because you have such exquisite taste. Also, a decorator might have inhibited your own personal design style. It may take longer, but that may be a good thing. Most likely you'll end up with a home that appears "collected" over time, rather than one shopped for and decorated all at once.
ReplyDeleteThe blue and white picture is so beautiful and evokes a lovely childhood memory. When I was a child we had a similar chest in our home and I loved going through the drawers to see what treasures and trinkets my moher placed in each one. At Christmas she would fill the drawers with little presents for us to open during Advent.
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing a Q&A. I love your style and blog.
loved the interview about yourself! I can't believe you have been doing all the interior designing yourself! you are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI am particularly drawn to pictures 1, 3 and 4. The old world kitchen with the dark wood table and chairs with blue and white fabric is especially pretty.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Cindy
Blue & White china is one of my all-time favorite accents. It's so classic!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Lovely pictures, oh boy impossible to choose just one, but that first, third and last picture are just heavenly. So nice getting to know more about you and your home building! Your taste is amazing, cannot imagine you doing any better!
ReplyDeleteLove that cabinet topped with a gorgeous collection of blue and white, I covet.
