Theres my little chair, bag of "essentials' and flip flops...perfection right there!
Now onto trends..........
Are you a trend follower? Or a trend trailblazer? Or a trend middle child (you know the one that doesn't commit to them but is somewhat intrigued by them at the same time)? I would say I am not a trendsetter at all with regard to design. I like what I like, don't really care if its "in" or not, and a trend will not keep me from pursuing what I enjoy and feel is right for my home. Granted, some trends are easier to warm up to than others, no doubt. However when the market is saturated with a popular trend then my exposure to it is great and there is a higher probability for me to like it if it fits into my personal design style. Chevron or herringbone as an example is something I have loved since I knew what shapes were. Something about a herringbone floor makes me weak at the knees. The light woods, heavily influenced by Belgian design being another "trend" which I love and have loved well before they were de rigueur (Hey maybe I am a trendsetter after all). In any case today, I look at some of the current very popular trends and would love to get the pulse of my uber sophisticated readers and my really "in the know" viewing audience as to what you think is here to stay and whats on its way out the door. I happen to like many of these trends but there is no denying their current very long ride on the "trend train". So do tell me what you think, Always fun to know!
1. CHEVRON, if you want to refer to its less trendy surname, go with Herringbone. I personally like it, feel its very overplayed however in everything from fabrics, to clothing to textiles used in pillows and anything you can upholster, rugs, you name it. There is no doubt it gives a space tremendous impact with its bold pattern, particularly in bolder or bright colors, but there can be too much of a good thing. However, give me a classic Chevron/Herringbone floor and you won't hear a peep! What do you think?
2.INDUSTRIAL CHIC. Not a look I personally ever became a big fan of but in the right Soho or Kensignton flat/loft, it could be a beautiful thing. Again I feel its very overplayed thanks to our friends, RH who mass marketed this look and then some. The steel with the reclaimed woods is a definite "look" and when it wasn't a trend, it was unique, vintage and rustically charming. How do you feel about it now that its a trend and seen everywhere?
3.IKAT. It seems like we woke up one morning and BAM everytime I turned around I was staring at Ikat in pillows, on a sofa or chair, in clothing, wallpaper, I would say it was like the "Ikat invasion". Granted its " a look' but a very trendy one in my eyes. It would not work with my style or the decor in my home and even if I had a more transitional space/beach house or a house where this would be very appropriate, I am not sure I would have jumped on the Ikat bandwagon. But then every now and then I will see ikat pillows in navy and white and like their fresh and crisp appeal. What do you think?
4.PALE/BLONDE/WASHED WOODS. In certain countries in Europe, light or blond woods have been part of and are the basis of their design scheme. In Belgium and the Netherlands, lighter woods are commonplace and you would have to have to have been hiding under a rock to not recognize the powerhouse that Belgian influenced design has become. Again in part thanks to RH, this look has been seen everywhere, and has totally saturated the market. I happen to love it trend or no trend, always have. Will it stay fresh here in the U.S. or will it go until the next big thing come around?
5.STARBURST MIRRORS. I would almost be willing to hedge a bet that 1 out of every 6 remotely design conscious person has a starburst mirror. A testament to their wild popularity, gracing millions of walls from coast to coast. There is no denying that they are great looking, fun, new and decorative. But you can't open a magazine wtihout seeing them. So...are they going to stick around or is their reflection getting duller and duller by the minute?
6.KOOBU OR KUBU CHAIRS I happen to like these, they are comfortable, good looking, sturdy, and practical. Again they have become extremely popular as of late. You see them in breakfast rooms, even dining rooms and in many outdoor settings. I have to admit I could see using them next to a big over sized table for a covered porch/loggia area. I think they are quite good looking. Do you think this is sticking around or should they take a seat in the near future?
7. HORSES. You can't open a magazine without seeing a room graced with some kind of horse influence, tpyically a great big painting or sketch or photograph of a horse. Horses are BIG right now. As a former rider, I love horses with all my heart, and think they are the most beautiful animal. BUT, I just fail to see them in a space that otherwise has nothing remotely to do with anything equestrian. Most of the time, I think they just look like a trend of the moment and don't really "get" the look, it might just be me. Now if you are a equestrian, horse breeder or own a racing barn...that's a whole different story! So what do you think, will this trend gallop into the sunset never to be seen again?
8. IMPERIAL TRELLIS. Cannot recall a fabric that became as wildly popular as the infamous Imperial Trellis, talk about saturating the market! Granted, its a great print, comes in a whole host of colors, and is highly decorative but there really is too much of a good thing. I for one, got a little tired of opening a design magazine and being absolutely sure that within 50 pages of looking, yep....I would spot something with Imperial Trellis. The fabric that launched a million rooms. What do you think? Will it stand the test of time or will this look dated and like a bygone trend before we know it?
I have to admit, trend or no trend I happen to love this bathroom, and that pale blue paper
So what do you think? Whats here to stand the test of time and whats 2 steps out the door? I love to take the pulse of what all you up to the minute, design savvy readers are thinking. Let me know, and hope you have a fabulous day!!
I think all of these will fall out of favor. Chevron (zigzag) to be the first of it quickly followed by Icat. I am sick of both. I did like a little industrial here and there mixed with other things but I am growing tired of it. White washed wood is the only one of these that I think stays around in some form. An authentic chair with a distressed treatment..I think will still be pretty in years to come. But...it will not be the IN thing. Imperial trellis...I like and is the only trend I've used and only on a chair seat.
ReplyDeleteStarburst mirrors...aren't they already on the way out?
Everything is destined for people to get tired of it except really good antiques. And even they go up and down depending on tastes.
Nothing is exempt from this...I'm sure in the 70's bentwood rockers were called classic. You saw them in all the magazines along with house plants. I wanted one so badly when I was a kid and was convinced that I would always love it. My grandmother had one and when she died it went to my aunt. I was so disappointed because I was convinced I would love it always. Well, it disappeared quickly from my aunt's house and it wasn't many years that I was so glad I didn't have that as an albatross around my neck because sentimentality would have prevented me from getting rid of it.
I think with antiques sometimes they just call the look something else and it's the same stuff....like Country is now called Cottage or Farmhouse. But the colors change.
My other aunt had a saarinen tulip table that I thought was the best as a kid. She got rid of it long ago...and now I'd love to have it in my house at least for a few years. Everything changes.....
Great subject! I will admit I fell prey to buying a few of these trends, have ikat pillows on my bed, light wood breakfast room table and chevron rug in my living room.
ReplyDeleteTruth be told I AM getting a little tired of the ikat and chevron, but do love my table. I was never a big trend follower but somehow I really liked these when I saw them, and guess my house would feel current by having them. I could see within a year or two I will likely feel compelled to replace them. Hate the horse thing and also don't get it, and do not at all like the industrial look, for me thats reserved for warehouses and commercial lofts.
Really great post...you did your homework!
I'm really tired of the imperial trellis that has been done and done some more!
ReplyDeleteI think a good starburst mirror is classic; and herringbone floors will always and forever thrill me.
Ekk...hoping my current design of herringbone/chevron sandwash deck on Oasis house sells before the rage is over! A brilliant post as always...you are pretty amazing woman!
ReplyDeleteBeach looks absolutely wonderful, and the fact that it seems deserted is a big bonus! I love Chevron, and industrial chic (actually all the trends you mention)
ReplyDeleteI LOVED reading this post...trends drive me crazy because they are so hard to avoid. I often think, do I really like that? or is it because I have seen it 5000 times and it has grown on me?? I think they will all be gone (out of the glossy's anyway) in the not too distant future and in 20 years they will all be back with a twist.
ReplyDeleteI love that grey washed parquetry ... just perfect for a beach house.
ReplyDeleteThere's 'A Lovely Blog' award for you to pick up on 'Scrapbook'

Melissah (Scrapbook)
RH has taken some favorite design elements; originals i would hunt for my shops, became diluted.
ReplyDeletestill adore chevron; those floors were to die for! imperial trellis, and living in an equestrian region; horses
fun post tina!

Such an interesting post, Tina! I don't tend to go trendy, but I think that's because my taste is more traditional and many of the bold patterns and industrial pieces don't fit with what I've already got going on.
ReplyDeleteI suppose if money were no object, I could go with the trends and just redecorate every few years. However, I usually try to choose core pieces that will stand the test of time. I'm updating my living/dining rooms, and I'm trying to make decisions that I'll be able to live with for a long time.
I do love my koobu chairs though, and can't imagine not having a place for them for a long time.
Perhaps I could pull a chair up next to you on that fabulous beach and we could further discuss :)
Tina,
ReplyDeleteI really don't even like talking about interiors after seeing your beach! OMG! I live by the Atlantic and I know how beautiful it is during the summer, at least! :-)
I hope you really enjoy every second you're there and eat some fresh seafood... what about some lobster rolls? Yum!
Now, talking about trends... honestly speaking, I'm tired of some. Maybe because I see too many of them all day. I think you just should buy something if you love it, not because it's trendy to have it around. Have that said, the last picture is one of my favorite bathrooms of all.
Have a happy day!
xo

Tina...that picture with the chair and the ocean...makes my whole body just relax! The beach is my happy place also. Trends...they certainly have been around forever....just like in fashion. I think if you just sprinkle a little around it is OK...but using every trend in a room can be oh so predictable. There is nothing worse that a really cheap looking version of a trend to me. So pick one and do it well :)
ReplyDeleteI'm incredibly jealous of your spot at the beach. It looks heavenly! I would love to get away for a bit and just sit and read a book and listen to the waves ... in peace. It's good for the soul. Glad you were able to get away for a bit. I'm with you on the trends. If I had written this post I would have said the exact same things! I'm not a trend hater if it fits into my style of decor. I still love a starburst mirror for the home. It adds some energy to a room and I know we all could use a little more of that. And herringbone will always, always be chic in my mind. Great post!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Tina!
ReplyDeleteI think that even though it would be easy to just say, "People should just go with what they love", it is TRUE that we all are fickle and tend to get on the bandwagon and go with what others are doing. BUT I think we must see what we do love and measure it up to those styles that HAVE stood the test of time. Blond woods from Europe? YES. Antiques like Nita said? ABSOLUTELY. But is someone likes modern, then there are even MODERN CLASSICS that are deemed worthy to examine for their timelessness. CLASSIC IS THE WORD for any genre of design. Anita
I hope you are having a wonderful time at the beach! Uber relaxing!
ReplyDeleteI guess because of my work, I follow trends, know what they are and of course we buy them for the store.
But personally, I am on a "discovering who I am and what I love" mission.
I love the lighter, bleached or greyed woods, the natural palette but I guess because I don't want to date our home by my finishes ( I don't want to have to make any changes once it's complete)...I won't get into many trends as we complete the house.
I think I am into timeless, classic and maybe play with one now and again but nothing very big as to have an investment in.
That's just me but I agree with you...that powder room wallpaper is fabulous!
Happy days at the beach!
Donna
What a helpful post. I am updating right now and this is very timely. Thanks
ReplyDeleteWell trends are just that~people respond to them because they look fresh and then all of a sudden it seems as if it is everywhere. I don't tend to like geometrics or world market kind of stuff (having been saturated it by living overseas) so I am not attracted to it. I like the old school herringbone, as I like just about anything old. I do like the greyed out Belgian thing, but don't have it in my house. Trends can sound like a bad thing, but they are just part of design, and then all of a sudden there is a new trend that is fresh and fun!
ReplyDeleteOh how I hope the horses go! And the Ikat. But keep the trellis forever and ever please (if you have any control over this :)
ReplyDeleteStacy
I'm not big on trends, the only one I love here are the mirrors. If you must have something trendy, do it in small doses, just to update a look. The herringbone floors however I don't consider a trend, this is timeless and classic. As for the blond woods of Europe, like them, but again only in small doses. One piece can be a nice timeless element in a room. I personally think that RH missed the mark by changing their entire collection to this look. I am not inspired like I was with their previous collections. And if I see another chair or pillow done in a green and white imperial trellis, I'm going to scream. Definitely overdone. And Ikat to me is very so what. (Hey, that rimes!) The older I get, the less trendy I get, contrary to my oldest daughter who loves all that fresh, trendy stuff. Heck, she can't wait to have her own apartment so that she can decorate it all with Ikea! (Lord help me. Again, Ikea has some fab things, but in SMALL DOSES!) Sigh, she's so young!
ReplyDeleteYou beach vaca looks so relaxing. I'm hoping to steal away to the beach myself in a few weeks. Now, abuot trends. I think that the word "trends" are given to items and looks by the "design gods" who want the general population to buy into their point of view. While I do acknowlege that some design statements make a bigger impact than others, I really believe that a true "trend" should be whatever you love and what makes you feel good. You will never go wrong when you decorate to please yourself and your family.
ReplyDeleteI happen to like all the looks (trends) you pointed out, even though some of them would never make it into my personal decor because they are not me.
Tina we are totally in sinc today! I did a post on trends also! I think most trends are just revisiting us from the past. They tweak them a bit, but they were here once, gone and then they will be back, if they are not over the top. The trends that you mentioned, that I feel will come back or even stay are the chevron floor, not the fabric, although a flamestitch is basically a classic chevron. The starburst mirror is revisiting from the past, it will go out and trust me it will be back again1 Ikat is here to stay, maybe not as a star but as a supporting actor in the room. Imperial trellis has such a neutrality in its form,I think it will be here to stay, again maybe not as much as we have seen in the recent past, but trellis patterns mix well with just about any other pattern.
ReplyDeleteIndustrial will remain for those that had this look before it became a trend, they are die-hard collectors and they will continue collecting. As far as wood tones go. We go dark, then medium, then light, then aged. It will cycle back again and again. Fun post!! Trends have been on my mind lately too!! I love when we are like-minded!! xo Kathysue
PS Keep enjoying that gorgeous beach, Sigh, Big, Big SIGH
I try to go with the classic style - but find myself caught up in trends. I love every photo you posted - who wouldn't. But most likely would not use them in my own home.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!!
Hi, Tina. Love the beach photos. Enjoy. As for trends, I am -- almost across the board -- not fond of them.
ReplyDelete1)Herringbone floors in wood, limestone or marble are fabulous, as are textured fabrics. I am not a fan of the bold colored chevron rugs or fabrics, especially paired with primary color-painted wood.
2) Industrial chic, if genuine, can be attractive in small doses. The copies, however, don't do it for me. RH overkill.
3) Ikat -- and you forgot to mention suzani -- I do not understand their appeal at all. It is to me like a trendy article of clothing that everyone must have even if it is unflattering.
4) Pale blond washed woods I love in small doses. The Belgian esthetic is lovely, soft, suitable for combining with many other styles. I prefer the genuine article here as well, versus the RH remakes. I have an 1860's dessert buffet that was faux painted in the 1980's in France...well done, but its time had passed. My son stripped off all the paint and it has that wonderful washed wood look now that I find so much more accommodating to my more traditional/transitional style.
5) Starburst mirrors, yes, only if they are genuine antiques with beautifully gilded frames and bullseye glass.
6) Kooboo chairs are fine. I think they will last awhile because they reference Victorian wicker.
7) Horses, I don't get this trend. I predict it will last a nano second.
8) Imperial trellis only appeals to me when the color combo is subtle, like the two wallpapers you showed. The bold ones are too busy for me, and do not appeal in the same way bold chevron patterns do not appeal. Definitely overexposed.
Have a great beach day.
Victoria
I love these trends and have even caved in on a few, but I am definitely that middle child (really). A pillow, an ottoman, or something that I know I can change rather quickly is where I tend to use a trend. However, the view you are seeing NEVER goes out of style...so envious!! Relax and enjoy your time...
ReplyDeleteThe beach looks like heaven! I guess my approach is to buy and live with what I love and not worry to much about whether or not it's a trend.
ReplyDeleteHappy beach time!
My take on these trends:
ReplyDelete1. Chevron floors..classic will never be dated. Do not care for it on rugs, pillows, etc.
2. Ikat..fine if you like modern decor otherwise..no.
3. Industrial chic..if you reside in a loft..otherwise..no.
4. Imperial tellis, ikat, suzani..same look..over it. Do not have any of these in my home.
5. Koobu chairs..great for outside in my sunroom & terrace,,would not bring them indoors.
6. Horse murals & Art..big NO. I do have an antique hunt scene tapestry with horses that I adore.
7. Starburst mirror..never liked this look.
I have a classic traditional decor in my home. I have added a few french looking grey-washed chairs and the kooboo chairs outside. To me florals, diamonds, stripes, toiles are the way to go. I am so over the all gray/cream trend. I do not understand why anyone living in the Midwest or East Coast would want to live in a house full of gray when we have so many gray days & long, snowy winters. I need to be surrounded by warm neutrals that feel cozy and homey, creams, blues, greens, yellows, tans, beiges burgundy & gold. Think Carolyn Roehm.."A Passion for Interiors" classic, beautiful interiors, that's how I like to decorate my home.
and I almost forgot my FAVORITE look..DAMASK..would not want to live with out it...Love it.
ReplyDeleteIndustrial chic is good in small doses hate when someone tries to do a whole room in that style. I love antiques and my home is filled with them so when someone asks me if something is real or not it pushes my buttons because nothing is safe from being copied and it takes the uniqueness away. I’m not a trendy person but love RH since they have items made from very old/sourced wood and such. Love this post it really got me thinking. Enjoy your day on the beach!
ReplyDeleteAnything that is really done well is trend-proof. Whether it happens to incorporate any of these elements or not. If you want to hop on the bandwagon fine, but know that you will feel out of the loop soon enough. I'm with Jeanne, if you really love it - the forever kind of love - then use it and will be yours to "own".
ReplyDeleteYour time at the beach sounds divine! I'm headed to the beach for Labor Day weekend and cannot wait to feel the sand between my toes. Hard to believe Maui was a month ago, but this trip is to the Oregon Coast. Like you, I have not been a big fan of most trends. I tend to tire of these things quickly. It would have to be in a very small dose.
ReplyDeleteI have been collecting magazine clippings for approximately 15-20 years. What I love now is what I loved then. I tend to avoid trends like the plague, although, if something I love DOES become trendy I start to question its merit! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThis post is great. Thumbnailing the trends. The images you found are fantastic. These trends that you have showcased are actually a little annoying. Particularly the starburst mirror. I never liked the starburst in the '60's and I don't now. I have always been afraid of being impaled by it.
ReplyDeleteSo true about trends, I try to fight it in clothes and interiors but as I look around hmm, I haven't put up a very good fight. It's so hard to be completely classic and timeless.
ReplyDeleteOh where are you exactly? We are already talking next year's holiday and i so want to do an Eastern seaboard trip
I have to agree with you on all of these being "trendy" at the moment. In my own home, I really just try to do what I love (and don't think I will tire of in the forseeable future). I am not a trend setter by any stretch....and many of the "trendy" things I like to see in others' homes but really don't want in my own. With that said, I don't think the average person who doesn't obsess over design blogs and magazines has a clue what is the next hot ticket.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun post. These are popular trends indeed. I do like most of them but I'm a little nervous about whitewashed wood to be honest. Remember the very early 90's? I've seen alot of those kitchens in my remodeling and over time oak turns orange. After 20 years they won't be that lovely greige limed color. I think one or two of anything is fun, a whole room (a la Restoration Hardware) is tooooo much.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't have them myself, herringbone wood floors will stand the test of time. The rest are just "trendy" in my opinion. I don't care for any of the ones that you listed. I think granite counter tops, with the exception of black, are on the way out in favor of marble or other surfaces. Seagrass rugs with the "material borders" are going to be so out, trust me on this one. Hang on to your Heriz everyone! The "aqua" and light blue trend will be gone in short time as well. Traditional, classic decor will stand the test of time, and that is what I personally shoot for. Tina, I love your blog, your style of writing, and watching your house unfold. Your personality shines through. You have wonderful, classic taste!
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of chevron and trellis! I also love those Booku chairs! My mom grew up on a horse farm so equestrian touches are throughout our home, and I like those too! As for the others--not really my style! I'm with you though, I like what I like, regardless of whether it's trendy or not!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great post! I see these trends all the time! Gotta love em though!
ReplyDeletexo,
amanda
Oh- I could write a book-but I won't because this is, after all, your blog! In the past years I fell prey to getting on the "bandwagon" of all that was new and popular but 10-maybe 15- years ago- I decided to buy what I loved and love what I buy. I would rather have one great piece that I love than a house full of "today's best".
ReplyDeleteHerringbone floors- Yes in the right setting..we had them in a house in the historical district...in most modern homes-no...at least not for my taste. I am getting herringboned to death with rugs and pillows and chairs~
Industrial- I love it in its proper place. Give me a loft and it is perfect- Not for ME but right for the setting of city chic.
Ikat- SCAT! Too trendy for me.
Starburst mirrors- You can find the ones from the 60's and 70's in the resale stores. I think they are a re-do and will probably start fading out soon.
Kubu- Like the chairs-they are fun and functional..although I would tend to use them in a sunroom or enclosed porch setting with a game table or something. Wicker/rattan comes and goes through the years but is always a staple in the South-or somewhere~
Horses- I always think of the RL "horse rooms" that were so popular back in the early 90's. I think if you are a horse person & ranch, or live that life, they are a wonderful addition to that type of decor.
Imperial Trellis- Was also popular back in the 60's/early 70's. MyHero's gradmother had it going up her 2 story staircase and it had a real SHEEN to it...when she passed and the house went up for sale that was the first thing I removed. I have been tired of it since that time!;>)
I say-Use your head and buy the best you can afford of something you truly LOVE! I have a violet and cream toille chair & hassock in an upstairs bedroom and it is one of my favorite pieces ever-is it cool today? Probably not- do I care? Not a whit!
Great post- I always read you but, with my work schedule, I don't always have the time to reply. Love coming here- xo Diana
the bleached herringbone floor rocks my world!
ReplyDeletehave fun at the beachie poo!!
We love chevron floors and think they are classic and have stood the test of time. A chevron pattern on rugs and fabrics are a trend that will fade with time like the imperial trellis and Ikat patterns. However, if someone loves it they should do it. We tend to not be trendy but classic and mix in a few trendy pieces in accessories from time to time. For us, the key is to make sure the big ticket items are classic and then mix in a few of the trendy accessories if you love it. Have to admit we're loving the koobu chairs right now but possibly a trend.
ReplyDeleteThe bleach herringbone floors are so inviting and beautiful. Trend or not, those will always be at the top of my list.
ReplyDeleteI know that somethings are trends but I do love them at the time. For instance, at first I did not like the ikat print. Now, I can't get enough of it. I know next year it may be a different story. The herringbone floors are gorgeous. I don't think that will ever go out of style. It's sort of retro. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific post. I must say guilty as charged.
ReplyDeleteI do have chevron/herringbone floors in my living room and wouldnt' trade them for the world. had to fight for these with DH, and now he loves them as much as I do!
Cannot stand the industrial or horse painting trend, don't get either one. Ikat is not such a love either. I do like the imperial trellis though I agree its EVERYWHERE so it doesn't seem as speical. But that last bathroom I would make an exception for! Well done Tina....love your gift of writing and expressing yourself.
I would classify myself as maybe a little bit of a trend follower, although I've never done wallpaper, and I like every wall in my house to be the same color; I don't particular like window dressings (other than blinds).
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do like coastal style decorating and blue & white chinoserie, and I know both of them are trendy right now.
My sister-in-law would love that horse triptych, but she's allowed - she lives on a farm and breeds horses :)
The sea looks lovely - I wish I was by the sea right now!
I love this post! Although I like all of the trends you mentioned, aside from the starburst mirror I do not have any of them in my house. I like very traditional decorating and the look of layers that you have aquired over time.
ReplyDeleteI think people should decorate their homes/castle exactly as they please, whether the items are in style or not. If you like it than that is allthat matters.
Have a great time!Enjoy the wter, waves and solitude of the beach.
I really expected white subway tile to be on your list!!! I am so tired of opening a magazine and seeing it everywhere. Many of the items you listed don't stand out to me as being a trend (horses, kubu chairs) but now that you have mentioned them, I will probably start seeing them everywhere. Thoughtful post as always! Jana
ReplyDeleteI added some chevron pillows to my sofa this year and yes, I have a sunburst mirror. But the rest, though I really like it, I haven't incorporated yet.
ReplyDeleteI find I have traditional taste as a base layer (kind of like the little black dress) and then update accessories over the years to give things a boost.
And, just like shoe styles and skirt lengths....if it's out today, it will be in tomorrow and vice versa. That's why it's important to follow your own instincts and not just what's "hot".
Just my two cents! :)
xoxo Elizabeth
this collection of design are super and very nice post. new design are very good. all collections are pretty good..and all the best for your future designs..
ReplyDeleteThought provoking post Tina and you certainly touched on the biggies! I really like most of these "trends" - funny you said that about herringbone vs. chevron...I love that pattern in wood floors or brick but not as much on fabrics. Of course I have seen a lot but somehow in the hard surfaces it seems more timeless! Hard to say - I guess the best is always buy what you love and it never goes out of style! Enjoy the beach!
ReplyDeleteDear Tina .... I am finally BACK and able to make a comment! LOVE this post! You have captured the mood perfectly. Trends ..... what is in and what is out. Personally, I think what is in is what you love and what you feel happy with. I am not talking good design ... I am just saying that if something makes you happy then go with it. Secondly, classic style and design will never date. The trends of Ikat, Imperial Trellis, Industrial Chic .... I myself believe everything, as in life, in moderation is a good thing. However, in this instance I believe these styles have been overdone and have saturated the market. I personally adore imperial trellis if it is understated because I think it has more impact that way. I am like you as I love that bathroom wallpaper ... stunning! But who wants to be confronted by two large upholstered bright green imperial trellis covered chairs everyday? Some people yes but I would find it overpowering .... my home is my sanctuary so I feel a need for serenity! As for ikat well I have to say I have never been a huge fan although I agree navy and white ikat on a crisp white sofa is perfect or a pink and white ikat cushion on a sunbed ... perfect but once again moderation and balance is the key. As for herringbone .... floors definitely .... I love herringbone floors! The wicker or kubu chairs are a favourite of mine because of the climate we live in and it definitely is island time when you sit on them! Equestrian I am always a huge fan as it ties in with so many classic styles however not in artwork but in objet' art and details such as lamps, cushions, riding boots in a hallway, framed stirrups in a study .... I could go on but I am running out of time! Congratulations on your award ... well done! I would love to get your email address as we will be in LA in February next year and would love to get a blog contingent for a get together ... Lisa at Hamptontoes would love it! Great post Tina ... I have thoroughly enjoyed it

I am certain Burlap.... is a passing trend as well!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Herringbone floors such as the photo above with the horse artwork(do not care for horse art) which is golden in color, do not care so much for the light, washed herringbone floors. I think the latter will become dated looking in time while the goldenhue has stood the test of time..a true, beautiful classic.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of floors, I am having quite a difficult time choosing carpeting (runner) for my main staircase. Will you be doing the same for your staircase? I think you have superb taste Tina and would appreciate any suggestions you may have for what is a good, durable yet beautiful option for stairs. Thank you!
ReplyDeletegreat, great post tina... many of these trends i've completely fallen for, and others i can't stand (ahem, starburst mirrors). love, love, love the industrial chic look... but i totally agree that these pieces seemed so much better when they were truly vintage or salvaged. i love when you have pieces that actually tell a story... something you inherited or found at a flea market... you know. thanks for posting!!
ReplyDeleteI'm ready for the starburst mirrors to go away. Everyone's trying to do them cheaper (I saw one with popsicle sticks. Yes.) but they all look the same.
ReplyDeleteThe trend I'm really, REALLY tired of is the gallery wall. Everyone thinks they're being original, but they all tend to have the same things. Plus I just can't stand when frames don't match! I don't know what it is, but it drives me nuts!
I still love ikat, the mirrors .chevron and trellis. Dare I call them"classics"?
ReplyDeleteAs for industrial and blond woods, not a whole room please, just a touch.
As for horses, if they say something about you(like you play polo), fine. Otherwise, think bookends please.
BTW, congrats on your subscribers.
