Can we talk?

Hi there! Sorry been "MIA" the last few days, have relatives in town and have been busy busy busy! One of these "Can we talk" posts is long overdue. Love when we get to "chat" about various things as part of the fun is bouncing ideas off of one another. Now don't get mad at me, but I get very excited for fall shopping. And honestly since we are now on day 6 with an unbearable heat wave, fall isn't sounding so bad right now:) How about you?

I love cool mornings when I can slip on a toasty sweater, a cute vest, and get to wear a beautiful pair of riding boots. I have a bit of a "uniform" for day to day that involves layers, almost always a scarf, plenty of cashmere (some sweaters I have had for over 12 years), and a bit of gold jewelry, and of course....always a great bag!!

So...my question is what are your fall staples? What do you tend to buy at the start of the season? A great coat? Build on your sweater collection? Are you more of an accessories girl? Or all the above (if so we are destined to become fast friends) lol. I like building over time but get very excited over fall fashions...here are some of my staples. Then its your turn to talk!

Left to right, top to bottom...

1. Gotta have a great bag, true a Bottega means coughing up the bucks but honestly any expensive bag I have ever bought has more than paid for itself in the years of mileage. Good beautiful bags do not go out of fashion ( I do not buy expensive trendy bags for that very reason) but do believe in investing in a good black bag, dark brown and maybe a blue of some sort.

2.A beautiful pair of boots. I love boots. I really love riding boots as they are comfortable and look beautiful with jeans as well as a skirt and tights. I like a tall riding boot like this one....

3. A great vest......check! Love Barbour and own a few of their vests and coats, lightweight but warm, very chic and very English. A vest is a great layering piece pure and simple, a very timeless look!

4.A beautiful cashmere scarf. I own dozens of scarves, both for winter and summer. For winter I have gray, black, dark brown and oatmeal. I find those four colors alone get me through almost every outfit. Another very good investment. Love the tissue weight because they wrap around the neck beautifully without feeling cumbersome. Stay tuned.....I am going to be carrying a wonderful line of them come fall!

5. A bit of gold jewelry. I like a chunky gold watch, maybe a simple pair of gold hoops or studs and maybe a pretty gold link bracelet. The less is more principle works here.

6. A good fitting pair of jeans. I am admittedly at the age where I feel like jeans are more a no than a yes (speaking for myself) however a good fitting pair of straight jeans, not super skinny ones because I feel those are more for younger girls, can do wonders in terms of their slimming effect and they look super chic with a pair of riding boots!

7. I am a cashmere sweater hound. I have owned some of my sweaters for over 10 years! The basic cable knit and turtlenecks do not ever go out of style. I buy mostly neutrals but every now and then will go for a fun color like a red or loden green. Once again a great staple. Every year I buy a few more to add to my sweater collection.

So there you have it a few of my staples. Now it's your turn to talk! What are your fall staples and what will be making its way into your closet this fall? Thanks for stopping in, have a fabulous Friday and great weekend!

  1. Hi Tina, love that outfit! I don't wear jeans any more because they never looked good on me but wear straight pants since they are most flattering.

Very out of character for me but just ordered a Max Mara coat. I fell in love with it and indulged as an early birthday gift. So that's my first official fall purchase. Sweaters, scarves and a new tote bag are always staples for me. Fun post.

  2. Hello Miss Tina! Welcome back. It's so hard to think about Fall clothes when it is going back into the 100's this week. It doesn't really start to get chilly here until November. My uniform consists of my J Jill jeans or black slacks (I have 3 sizes in my closet) , crisp white shirt to hide my muffin top, and boots with heels to make me look at least 5'2". Have a great weekend!

  3. Totally agree on your handbag philosophy! I have several "investment" bags that I've had for many years. My fall "uniform" is almost identical to yours only change it to Lilly Pulitzer colors. My cashmere sweaters are shades of pinks, greens, and yellows and I have several down vests but my favorite one is my Lilly print. Add a scarf (also have several Lilly murfee scarves) and a pair of Tory Reva flats and I'm good to go. I like the NYDJ jeans....a "mom jean" fit but looks stylish. Love your style!

  4. .. I'm with you all the way ... except the jeans. I have never been a fan of denim, any color any style. I'd have all this with black stretch trousers, or just black of any kind that looks good. This outfit is such a great look. Heat? Relief is on the way ... so the report goes.

    Best

  5. Give me those riding boots and I'm a happy girl. Fall does sound good after having 100+ temps PLUS humidity yesterday! I didn't get a chance to spend my day out on my covered deck. It was way too hot!

Yes, bring on the cooler temps, but just with one thing: the summer dreaming and freedom before the craziness of school begins! (I got my dream job: teaching French ONLY at the high and middle school! YIPEEE!)

Have a super day, Tina! Anita

  6. This could have been my post - my weekend staples for sure. Love a turtleneck cashmere sweater with jeans and riding boots, but also love with a heeled boot if I need to feel a little taller. I must get a Barbour vest - I am the biggest fan of their coats and jackets. Happy weekend!

  7. Love all of your selections...that Bottega bag is to die for if only I could afford it!!

  8. Nooooo. I'm soooo not ready for fall. But I know it's coming. I actually have to rebuild my wardrobe as I've lost some weight over the past year. Nothing in my closet fits, except my shoes (and handbags). So I'm going to have to start from scratch this year. Probably cashmere sweaters and jeans first and some fall dresses. As the weather gets cooler a nice warm coat to snuggle up in. I guess I better get started!!!
Happy shopping. Hope you get to cool off this weekend! XOXO

  9. Oh, I LOVE cashmere too! You just feel hugged by it, don't you?

I love this look, Tina! This is something you would feel comfy and pretty wearing it.

I hope you're having a great summer, sweetie... we're busy, busy, busy around here too! :-)

  10. I am happy with a black or dark blue pair of jeans, workout pants, and a big sweater. I love my UGGs and my boots! Not a big accessories during the day unless I am dressing up for lunch, etc.
    Have a great weekend, Tina.

  11. Hi Tina!!!

It's funny, I was just cleaning out some drawers and moved out some of my fall basics to my upstairs closet (where I rotate depending on the season). A few years ago, I would never have thought I could wear leggings, but I had a great salesperson show me how to layer the proportions....and now that with a longer shirt or sweater and boots is my uniform. For something dressier, I love a great wrap dress and high heeled boots. I am a boots gal for sure. And, I do love a fabulous bag. I have a dark brown Celine that I've had a few seasons and it's that pebble leather, which wears so well. I'm already excited to bring it back out.

Hope you're staying cool. My poor little fellas are burning up at camp...thank heavens for the pool!
    xoxo Elizabeth

  12. Hey there! What a great post. I love summer, but my crazy summer schedule has had me secretly dreaming of the more normal pace of fall school days.

Your wardrobe pieces here are ageless-- love them. Last year I bought a pair of Frye riding boots. They did wonders for keeping me both warm & chic. I also bought a couple pairs of Sorrels for this winter-- one for snow & one for rain.

The perfect jeans can be so elusive; I struggle with that too.

    Cheers,
    Keri

  13. Timeless, ageless, all around perfect outfit, now and forever. This is exactly how I am teaching my daughters to shop as they age. Invest in good pieces and save the trendy stuff for the cheap shops. Whether your "good pieces" are JCrew or Gucci, buy the best staples you can afford. They truly go the long haul.

  14. So funny Tina.. I was just looking at some fall apparel this morning. You'd think living in the PNW I'd be savoring each sunny day but I've really "climatized" and don't like the heat much any more. When I was a young woman (30's!) I didn't hesitate to go running or play tennis when it was 90 degrees. Now.. I can't stand it for an instant. Anyway.. great outfit you've assembled here and I'd agree that these are the basics. I have lots of boots -booties, over the knee, riding, UGG, rain boots, etc.. Cashmere is great alone or for layering and the vest over the top is perfect for extra warmth. We wear a lot of hooded vests, trenches, and coats here because of the rain factor. Hope you enjoy your weekend! xxL

  15. Tina, living in the south, we don't begin thinking about Fall until October, but I must agree regardless of your locale, those items will always be basic. I love my riding boots, jeans, and turtleneck sweaters. Adding a nice scarf and a piece or two of gold jewelry finishes it off. You've got me thinking though and I just may need to add another sweater or two with corresponding scarf. Thanks.

  16. Hi Tina, Our Fall weather is not that cool here, but as it gets into November it is time to pull out the sweaters. My go-to outfit is a checked blouse under a cashmere pull-over, boot-cut dark washed jeans, dark brown ankle flat riding boots by LLBean, Fossil two-toned brown leather bag, Gold bangle or chain, pearl ear-rings, or gold loops. No scarf for me until very cold winter, and I only wear one with a coat. Bulky scarves around my neck just add to making me look heavier and I don't need that at all. If I am at the ocean I would add a pony tail and baseball hat!!
I think you and I have very similar, classic taste!! I do wear colored cashmere, cobalt, red, lime green and kelly green are my colors for Fall/Winter.

  17. this post has me lusting for Fall.. I find it so much easier to get dressed then!

  18. Good for you on some time away from the blog, it's always good to have a break. Love everything you share din the collage, almost all are staples. I've never been good with scarves, that is probably the only think I don't consider a necessity. A cashmere sweater and boots are near the top of my list, the other things generally fall into place after that!

    Have a splendid weekend Tina,
    tp

  19. Love your "must have's."
Mine would include the boots, but with our weather we just never know how cold it will be.
No jeans. Definitely scarves. Definitely cashmere. And a maxi skirt for sure. Also, the hottest jewelry trends (of course).
And a new bag. I totally agree on quality. I bought an awesome handbag YEARS ago in NYC, I still use it and I love it, it looks new!
    Have a great weekend.

  20. Love that! So classic.....pinned it. Love vests and anything to layer with, and a big yes to cashmere. I too collect boots and my all time favorites are a pair of Frye in a deep brown.

So agree about buying investment bags, they last for the long haul and never go out of style. I have a beautiful Prada that I am eyeing for the fall. Love fall clothes shopping but not quite ready to say goodbye to summer.

  21. This post is well timed since we're already seeing some fall fashion hit the stores.... Though it was way to hot to even consider trying them on. We're sweater girls since we can wear them in a business setting with a skirt or on the banks of a river for a regatta on the weekend. Cashmere is our go to fabric! Hope your relax this weekend.

  22. I'm obsessed with riding boots! I also love to buy scarves of all colors and patterned tights.

  23. Oh it is almost all similar Tina! I have had some of my cashmere for years. Adore the accessorizing, I have a couple of good winter bags, more than enough scarves, and a variety of jewelry. I used to wear only my gold classic jewelry, now I like some with beautiful semi-precious stones, and pearls.

  24. Hi Tina...I love your outfit, even though just the thought of warm clothes today makes me hot! I adore a cashmere turtleneck with an hermes scarf...and definitely boots of some sort.

Enjoy your weekend and let's hope this heat breaks! xoxo

  25. Opaque tights or leggings under: Long tunics, a sweater dress, skirt or flannel shorts. Oh, and
classic loafers or tall boots, of course. Much more comfy than jeans for the "mid-century set", like me!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Love your fall uniform. For me its tights, skirts sweaters, button downs, vests and my short cinched Burberry jacket. I teach so that works and I wear slacks and pants by Theory and always make a mini investment in their wonderful staples at the beginning of the season. Love that line.

A good bag is an excellent investment and every season I buy one or two "splurge" bags which normally see me through many many seasons.

  27. I live in SW Florida. Enough said. But there are some sweater-worthy days in winter. My choice is cashmere sweaters -- I love them and have them in many colors; cashmere scarves -- I have a collection of blacks, beige, soft golden yellow and French blue; leggings, a sweater dress or jeans -- I wear only NYDJ; Joan and David high boots or ankle boots with high or flat heels; one of my collection of handbags ( some as old as 30 years but my latest favorite is a Michael Kors satchel in a dark brown "alligator"); and my favorite jacket, hand-made by Mieko Mintz of old saris converted into kantha cloth.
    Happy weekend.

  28. Tina, LOVE your style!!!! I have a fall "uniform" Jeans, white tailored shirt, vest and great jewelry. LOVE boots but can't wear them!
And I am a handbag snob!!!! Gotta have a great one!

  29. "autumn, please hurry up!"

i ADORE each and every piece shown, oh my i really want that bag. my fall aesthetic mirrors yours tina, english and classic with layers and nearly always with a scarf. october this year = a month in england which includes my favorite; shopping for british clothes!

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is a fabulous autumn uniform! It will be still hot for another couple of months where I live, but I'm already looking forward to my favorite season. Jeans and riding boots are part of my autumn capsule wardrobe too, which consists mostly of simply pieces. I'm an accessory girl, and look forward to adding a new scarf to my collection.

  31. A great and classic look Tina. I love Barbrou anything, cashmere everything and adore scarves, have a major collection of them in all fabrics.

Boots- absolutely wear them all season long. Love your style in everything:-)

  32. very J. Crew-ish. chunky cableknit sweaters, jeans, hammered gold hoops, and anything that feels beachy. i'm more of a durable canvas tote kinda gal than a fabulous bag a la enchanted tina, but i would like to grow up a little and maybe spring for one. the scale is pretty important because i look ridiculous with certain bags (most women want the big bag to make their booty look smaller...but i'd like to have a booty!). i LOVE your picks and would feel like a million bucks in em.

    have a lovely weekend!

  33. Tina, I may not have the same budget but honestly we have EXACTLY the same tastes as far as fall dressing is concerned (and winter! which is this plus a big camel coat :). Right down to neutrals, straight leg jeans, riding boots, cable knit turtlenecks--see? I mean all of it! And as for the cashmere, I have had some of my vintage Ballantyne sweaters for nearly 25 years--and they are from the 1950s! And yes, the simple Gucci snaffle-bit black leather saddle bag that I bought in 2001 doesn't look dated in the least.
Thanks for a fun post. Bring on Fall!!!

  34. I find shopping for fall clothing far easier than any other season. My uniform is slightly different, since I don't care for pants. My "uniform" is a plain dress in a neutral color, with an eye-catching jacket or sweater, silk scarf (very sensitive to wool, even cashmere needs to be well away from my skin!), suede boots, and Wolford tights. Since designer handbags are out of my current budget, I use a vintage alligator bag most of the time.
My favorite piece of casual fall clothing is my olive green leather motorcycle jacket. Sounds strange, I know, but after years of heavy wear it's reached the perfect patina. Sort of like the one from this Sartorialist photo: http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/on-the-street-yasmin-london/

  35. Are we farewelling summer already...;)
I do love a handbag, a boot and a great pair of jeans.... as for cashmere... I could look for cashmere every day of the week... a cashmere sweater is the one piece of clothing that I never tire of...
And as for an oversized watch... the best!
    HAve a wonderful Sunday... xv

  36. Love everything you picked Tina. I agree with the riding boots and this fall I really want to invest in a great pair that will last me years. The most expensive bag I bought was a black Tory Burch tote and I don't see it going out of style anytime soon. With the heat NY has had I can see why you are thinking of some cooler temps soon ;)We walked in the city and were drenched..lol Oh and I did cut my hair. I had my stylist take off the layers because me hair needed a fresh start. It feels so much healthier now :)

  39. Love that whole look...classic and timeless. I'm not much for the skinny jeans but I love a good fitting pair of dark boot cut ones.

  40. Love your style and this quite similar to how i like to dress.

First on my list is always a great coat (normally camel or black) and of course boots are a big part of my wardrobe. Love scarves and layering too. I don't know if you ever buy from Zara but I buy a lot of inexpensive fill in pieces that look really expensive, they are worth checking out.
    That vest is great!

  41. Hi Tina,
I live outside Atlanta in Kennesaw, GA, and there are some places that are a must: In Marietta you must stop and eat at Gabriel's Bakery she is Paula Deen's cousin and is FAMOUS for her cakes. Especially her Strawberry cake. She is a friend of mine and I will send her your post or info to pass on or you can friend her on Facebook,. She has two cook books and her little place is famous for meat and three. But EVERYONE who is anyone in the ATL gets there cakes from her. Her name is Johnnie Gabriel.
The Square in Marietta is DARLING, cute places to shop, farmers market on Saturdays and a precious bed and breakfast. We also have some great places for biscuits: The Red Eye Mule (amazing hamburgers) Lunch and Breakfast cash only. Mountain Biscuits and Marietta Diner, all three have been on The Food Network. I can also arrange a visit at the Fabulous Fox Theater if you want. My friend is the Curator. There is also the Gone with the Wind Museum in Marietta. The Food Truck Park in ATL is a fun thing to do, it is open every day and the food is amazing, live music on the weekends. You must make sure you try the King of Pops popsicles! You can shop a million places but we do have a Ballard design store in Atlanta and it is awesome Also some really, really high end TJ Maxx's.
Highland Bakery in ATL is amazing as well. the good is delicious, and the sugar confections are incredible.

I see that you are going to the Opry Land Hotel In Nashville, I am going in Sept. I can figure out what is good there for you as well.
You will love Savannah, and Charleston. When you are by Wake Forest, I am not sure you have time, but if you are driving you MUST have peaches in South Carolina in Gaffney. AMAZING! Also, if you have time got to The Outer Banks! OMG! I was just there with my children and we 4 off roaded on the beach and saw the wild horses there are only 118 direct descendants Spanish horses from the 1600's. Truly a sight and worth the drive. The fall is one of the best times to go to the Outer Banks as it is still warm the beach is beautiful and not at all crowded . The Food is incredible.
I will happily tour you around Atlanta and you are welcome to stay here.I have a big house and plenty of room:) If you need anything please feel free to call me. Atlanta is not that far from Birmingham only about 3 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You must stop by a shop in Savannah called Four Eleven, it has the most wonderful home accessories and does beautiful monograms (we have had custom monograms done by them). Hope you have a wonderful trip!
    Warmly,

  44. I heart fall, too and was ready for it to begin when it ended last year... How bad is that?? Your staples are pretty much all of my staples. I started stocking up last night by shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. I bought a pair of riding boots and I can't wait to get them - and wear them!

  45. Tina, I will be on the HUNT for these boots, or ones just like them for the next few months.
If you could tell me who makes them I would be so very grateful. I love the look!!!!
I am so ready for fall. Jut made a drastic change with my appearance... cut 6 inches from my hair... and getting rave reviews all around. Now I just need to put together an outfit like this (with these boots) and I will feel even better. Absolutely love your blog.
